SpeedFactory x Wavetrac AWD Limited Slip Differential - B-Series
AWD B-series builds have always had a differential problem. Either you run a spool and give up any ability to turn the car around, or you compromise on what the differential can hold. SpeedFactory partnered with Wavetrac to solve it properly, and the result is a diff built for the highest horsepower drag applications that still lets you drive the car back to the trailer under its own power.
It Uses Your Existing FWD Axles
This is the design decision that separates it from everything else, and it saves real money.
Most AWD differential options require you to modify or swap the passenger side cup to work with your axle setup. SpeedFactory designed around that entirely. This differential fits your existing FWD B-series axle sets with no modification and no cup swap.
If you've already got FWD axles you're happy with, they carry straight over. That's one less expensive part in an already expensive build, and one less thing to source before the car goes back together.
Worth noting: AWD CR-V front axles are also compatible with the standard version.
Standard Or Pro-Level?
The difference is spline count and what axles you're running.
Standard (27-spline) is the version for existing FWD B-series axle sets and AWD CR-V front axles. If you're using what you have, this is the one.
Pro-Level (28-spline) uses larger internal gears and is built specifically for Driveshaft Shop 28-spline Pro-Level axles and intermediate bar. This is the version for the highest horsepower drag applications, and it's in the fastest Hondas built to date.
Pick based on your axles rather than your ambitions. The Pro-Level only makes sense if you're running the DSS 28-spline hardware it was designed around.
Why Not Just Run A Spool?
Fair question if you're building a drag car, and the answer is drivability.
A spool locks both axles together permanently. Excellent for putting power down in a straight line, miserable for everything else. You can't turn the car around at the end of the strip without fighting it, and loading a trailer usually means disconnecting axles or getting someone to help push.
This differential drives both wheels the way a spool does when you need it, and still lets you steer normally when you don't. Turn around at the top end, drive it onto the trailer, and go home without a wrestling match.
What Makes A Wavetrac Different
Being honest, because helical differentials get oversold. Wavetrac, Quaife, Torsen, and MFactory are all torque-biasing helical designs and they all work well.
What separates the Wavetrac is a patented internal design that addresses the weakness every helical diff shares. Standard helicals rely on axle load to generate bias, so if a wheel unloads completely, torque bias drops toward zero and the differential behaves like an open unit at exactly the wrong moment.
Wavetrac's design maintains grip in those low traction conditions, which means both wheels keep driving instead of one spinning uselessly. On a launch where weight is transferring hard, that's the difference between hooking and hazing.
You'll Need Bearings
Worth sourcing alongside the differential rather than after. The bearings you need are:
Upper: Honda 91006-PX5-008
Lower: Honda 91005-PG2-004
Since the transmission has to come apart for this job anyway, fresh bearings are the sensible call rather than reusing ones with unknown miles behind a differential this expensive.
Transferable Lifetime Warranty
Wavetrac backs these with a transferable limited lifetime warranty, which matters on a part living inside a transmission. Transferable is worth more than people realize too, since it follows the car if you sell it.
