Wagner Tuning Competition Intercooler FK8 Civic Type R
The FK8's factory intercooler is the first thing that gives up when you start using the car. Third lap at a track day, or a few pulls back to back on a hot day, and intake temps climb, timing pulls, and the K20C1 quietly stops making what it made on the first run. This Wagner Tuning competition intercooler, part number 200001128, is the fix: a 15.4 liter core in place of the factory 6.4 liter unit, with 91 percent more frontal surface area, per manufacturer.
What It Is and Why It Works
The numbers matter here in a way they don't on a lot of parts. Wagner's competition tube fin core measures 670mm x 183.4mm x 125mm and puts 1226 cm² of frontal area in the airstream against the stock intercooler's 640 cm². More than double the core volume means more air sitting in the intercooler getting cooled, and more than 91 percent more face area means more of the air passing through the front of the car actually doing the cooling. That's what keeps intake temps flat on lap four instead of lap one.
The part that shows Wagner thought about the whole car: there's an air baffle inside the intercooler inlet that distributes charge air evenly across the core instead of letting it pile into one section, and the core is built to let enough air through to the components sitting behind it, including your radiator. Stuffing a bigger intercooler in the nose of a car usually means starving whatever is behind it. This kit is designed not to.
Cast aluminum end tanks handle the flow in and out, and the whole thing carries an anti-corrosion coating that Wagner specs for its heat conduction rather than just weather protection. At 9.6kg (about 21 pounds) it's not a heavy part despite the size.

Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Engine |
| 2017-2021 | Honda Civic Type R (FK8), including 2021 Limited Edition | K20C1 |
FK8 Type R only. This does not fit the FL5, the 1.5T Civic, or the Si. Wagner builds separate intercoolers for other platforms, and the FK8 core is sized to that car's specific opening and mounting points.
What to Know Before You Buy
Installation uses the factory mounting points and Wagner calls it plug and play. No cutting, no bracket fabrication, no tune required. It's a bolt-in that happens to be the size of a small suitcase, so give yourself an afternoon and a friend for lifting rather than expecting a thirty minute job.
Be clear on what this does and doesn't do. On a stock, untuned FK8 driven on the street, you will not feel a horsepower difference, and anyone telling you a bigger intercooler makes big power on a stock car is selling something. What it does is protect the power you already have when the car gets hot. If your FK8 is tuned, sees track days, autocross, or you live somewhere summer means something, that's the difference between consistent runs and watching the car fall off. If it's a stock daily that never sees a heat cycle worth worrying about, spend the money on tires first.
On lag: a bigger core holds more air, and physically that means slightly more volume to fill on spool. Wagner's answer is a light tube fin core rather than a brick, and FK8 owners running this setup generally report the trade as a non-issue relative to what they gain in consistency. We'd rather tell you the trade-off exists than pretend it doesn't.
The natural next step is a tune. An intercooler that holds intake temps down gives a Hondata FlashPro or KTuner calibration room to be aggressive without the ECU pulling timing to protect itself. Cooling first, then tune, is the right order on this platform.
