Description

Supertech Dual Valve Spring & Ti Retainer Kit - 00-09 Honda S2000 (F20C / F22C)

The F-series in your S2000 is one of the highest-revving production engines Honda ever built, and the valve springs are what make that possible, or what hold it back. This Supertech kit pairs dual valve springs with lightweight 6AL4V titanium retainers, built specifically for the F20C and F22C, to keep the valvetrain under control at high RPM and with more aggressive cams than the factory springs were ever meant to handle. If you're raising your rev limit, running upgraded cams, adding forced induction, or just want insurance against tired factory springs on a high-mileage motor, this is the foundation that lets the top end live.

Why You Upgrade Valve Springs

A valve spring has one job: close the valve and keep the follower pinned to the cam lobe no matter how fast the engine is spinning. Push the RPM high enough and a spring that's too weak can't close the valve fast enough to follow the cam, and the valve "floats," losing contact with the lobe. When that happens you lose power instantly, and in the worst case a floating valve meets a piston and ends the motor. On a stock F20C that already screams past 8,000 RPM, the margin is thin, and the moment you add a higher rev limit or a hotter cam, the stock springs are the first thing to give up. Stronger, better-controlled springs push that float point well past where you're actually using the engine.

The Dual-Spring Design

This kit uses a dual-spring setup, meaning two concentric springs per valve rather than one, and that does three real things. It provides more total seat pressure to control the valve at high RPM. It builds in a measure of safety, because if one spring ever fails the second can keep the valve from dropping into the cylinder. And critically, the inner and outer springs damp each other's harmonics. A single spring can resonate and surge at certain RPM, a vibration that momentarily robs it of control, and running two springs of different natural frequencies cancels much of that out. Supertech backs this up with computer modeling of each spring's wire stress and harmonics, keeping them below the thresholds that cause fatigue failure even under sustained abuse.

Materials That Survive the Abuse

The springs are wound from premium Superclean Chrome Silicon Vanadium steel alloy. The "Superclean" part matters more than it sounds: a cleaner alloy has fewer internal inclusions, and inclusions are exactly where a hard-working spring cracks and fails, so the clean material is what gives these springs their fatigue life at high RPM. The retainers are CNC machined from 6AL4V grade titanium, which is the real performance play. Titanium is far lighter than a steel retainer, and that's reciprocating valvetrain mass the spring no longer has to control. Less mass up top means the valvetrain can rev higher and the spring works less to keep everything in line, so you get both a higher float ceiling and longer component life.

Spring Specs

This kit is rated at 97 lbs of seat pressure at an installed height of 40.4mm. That seat pressure is what determines how much RPM and how aggressive a cam the springs can control, so it's worth matching to your actual build rather than guessing. Supertech makes the S2000 springs in several pressures and also in a beehive design, so if your cam card or engine builder calls for a different seat pressure, there's likely a matching Supertech kit; this particular kit is the 97 lb dual-spring configuration.

Install Note

Valve springs are not a bolt-on. Replacing them means getting into the top end of the engine, and the job is best done with the right spring compressor and ideally by an experienced engine builder or machine shop who can verify your installed height and check for coil bind and retainer-to-seal clearance. Get the seat pressure and installed height right for your combination and this kit transforms how the top end behaves; guess at it and you leave performance or durability on the table.
