Bigger Tires Make It Worse

Worth understanding, because this catches people out after a wheel and tire upgrade.

Wider front tires generate more steering load, and all of that load goes through the rack bushings. Factory rubber that was adequate on stock tires starts deflecting more, wearing faster, and developing play. The car that felt fine before now feels loose on center, and the usual assumption is that something in the steering column or the tie rods has gone.

Linear Response Is The Point

Rigid bushings don't just tighten things up, they change how the steering behaves through its range.

With rubber, small inputs get partially absorbed before the rack moves, so there's a dead spot around center and the response builds unevenly as you turn further. That's what makes a car feel like it needs a moment to decide what it's doing.

Rigid bushings remove that. The rack moves in direct proportion to your input from the first degree of steering, which is what makes the response linear. It's most noticeable on turn-in and on small corrections at speed, where the difference between direct and vague is the difference between placing the car and guessing at it.

No NVH Penalty

Most rigid suspension components trade comfort for precision. Spherical bearings, poly bushings, solid mounts, they all transmit more noise and vibration into the cabin than the rubber they replaced. That's a real trade you have to weigh.

Chasing Slop Everywhere Else Too?

Honda leaves roughly 2mm of clearance around the subframe bolts, which lets the subframe shift slightly under load. Since your suspension and steering rack all mount off that subframe, any movement there shows up as vagueness the same way rack bushing deflection does.
