Spoon Sports Carbon Plug Cover
Pull the factory plastic engine cover off a Honda and you're left looking at a bare row of coil packs. It's the point where a lot of bays start looking unfinished. Spoon's answer is this: an autoclave-molded pre-preg carbon and Kevlar cover that sits over the coils and turns the top of your engine into the best-looking part of the bay. It's dress-up with a bit of heat shielding, not a power part, and it's one of the most recognizable pieces in the Spoon catalog.
Real Dry Carbon, Not A Skin
Worth understanding what you're getting, because carbon covers vary enormously in quality. This is pre-preg dry carbon with Kevlar, autoclave molded, which is genuine composite construction rather than a plastic part with a carbon-look wrap over it.
The weight tells the story. The K20C version comes in at 85 grams against 700 grams for the factory plastic cover. That's not why you're buying it, but it's a good indicator of what the construction actually is.
Watch Out For Fakes
Straight talk, because it's a real problem with this part. Counterfeit Spoon carbon shows up constantly, and it's convincing enough in photos that people get caught out regularly. The knockoffs use cheaper layup, the weave wanders, and the finish yellows.
Buy through an authorized dealer. That's the only way to know you've got the real thing, and it's the difference between a piece that still looks right in five years and one that doesn't make it through two summers.
Pick Your Engine
Each cover is molded for a specific engine family, so match yours before ordering:
- 12231-16B-020 - B16A / B16B / B18C
- 12231-AP1-020 - F20C
- 12231-K20-020 - K20A, K20Z, and K24A
- 12231-FL5-020 - K20C (FK8, FL5, Accord 2.0T, Integra Type S)
- 12231-BF1-020 - BF1 Prelude
K24A Owners: You Take The K20 Cover
Worth explaining, since it's counterintuitive. The K20A, K20Z, and K24A all share the same valve cover, and the coil packs sit in identical positions across them. So a TSX, a K24 Accord, a CR-V, or an Element uses the same cover as an RSX or an EP3. Same part, no adaptation.
Where it changes is the K24Z. Honda redesigned that valve cover, and the oil filler cap protrudes into the area the plug cover occupies, so it takes a different shape entirely. If you've got a K24Z, this isn't your cover.
K20C Covers The Whole Turbo Family
Same logic on the modern side. The FK8 Type R, FL5 Type R, 2.0T Accord, and Integra Type S all run the K20C, and they all use the same cover. One part number, four cars.

Does not fit: K24Z (different valve cover, the oil filler cap intrudes into the plug cover area), B20, D-series, L15 turbo, or the 1.5T Civic engine (K20C1). On the S2000 this is F20C only, so the AP2 with the F22C is not covered. This is a plug cover, not a valve cover.
Before You Install It
A couple of practical notes. Pulling the factory cover sometimes takes some OEM insulation with it, so if your car has heat shielding Spoon doesn't replace, leave it in place rather than removing everything.
And once the carbon is on, don't rest tools on it. It's a finished composite panel sitting in the most convenient spot in your engine bay, and it's an easy thing to scratch while you're working on something else.
Who Should Run This Cover
This is for the owner building a bay they're proud to open, and for anyone already collecting Spoon pieces who wants the centerpiece. It sits at the top of the engine where everyone looks first, it's real dry carbon rather than a look-alike, and it's the kind of part that makes a good bay look finished. Pick your engine, bolt it on, and enjoy popping the hood.
