SpeedFactory SS-1200 Side Inlet Intercooler 1000-1200HP
At four figures the intercooler stops being a bolt-on and starts being a design constraint. You're moving enough air that a 3 inch core turns into a restriction, and heat soak between rounds costs you more than any tune will give back. The SpeedFactory SS-1200 Side Inlet/Outlet Universal Front Mount Intercooler is the top of their side-port line, running a 24x12x4.5 bar and plate core rated for 1,000 to 1,200 horsepower per manufacturer.
What It Is and Why It Works
The core face is 24 inches wide by 12 inches tall, the same frontal dimension SpeedFactory uses across the entire side inlet range. What changes as you go up the line is depth. The SS-850 runs a 3 inch core, the SS-1000 steps to 3.5, and this one goes to 4.5. More depth means more internal surface area and more air volume held in the core, which is what lets it absorb the heat a 1,000 horsepower setup puts into the charge.
Bar and plate construction handles boost cycling better than tube and fin, and SpeedFactory runs a staggered fin arrangement to keep pressure drop manageable through a core this thick. The end tanks are hand formed from H-3 5052 aluminum and fully TIG welded rather than cast.
Pay attention to the port sizes on this one, because they aren't matched. The inlet is 3 inches and the outlet is 3.5 inches. That means two different coupler sizes and two different clamp sizes, and it catches people who assume the whole charge path is one diameter. Both are bead rolled tube ends, so silicone couplers seat and grip properly instead of blowing off at the boost levels this core exists to support. M8 x 1.25 aluminum mounting bungs come welded on.
Side inlet means both ports exit the sides of the tanks rather than projecting rearward, so the charge piping turns outward instead of needing clearance behind the core. On a car with a big single turbo and a full front end, that's often the difference between routing piping cleanly and fabricating around it.

Where It Sits in the Side Inlet Line
All three side inlet units share the same 24x12 core face. You're buying depth, not width.

Overall width doesn't scale with the tier the way you'd expect. This unit measures 35.25 inches inlet to inlet, which is actually narrower than the SS-850 at 36.5 inches, because the tank designs differ. If width across your opening is the constraint, don't assume the bigger core is the bigger problem. Measure both.

At this power level you're almost certainly already fabricating a front end, but if you're fitting this to an EG, EK, or DC2 that still has factory structure, plan on cutting the bumper support and building brackets to the bungs.
What to Know Before You Buy
Order your couplers and clamps to match the mismatched ports. One 3 inch and one 3.5 inch, on both the coupler and the T-bolt clamp. Write it down before you order piping.
Be realistic about whether you need 4.5 inches of core. This is a race-level part and most people shopping SpeedFactory intercoolers are not in its window. If you're under 1,000 horsepower, the SS-850 or SS-1000 will cool what you're making, and the thinner core puts less material between your radiator and clean air. A 4.5 inch core sitting in front of a radiator is a real airflow penalty, and on a car that idles in staging lanes or sees any street time, buying more intercooler than your power level calls for trades coolant temps for charge temps you weren't struggling with. Overkill has a cost here, it just shows up on a different gauge.
You get the intercooler and nothing else. No charge piping, no couplers, no clamps, no brackets.
Vibrant Vanjen flanges can be welded on in place of the standard bead rolled ends for faster, more secure connections at high boost, which is worth considering at this power level. It has to be arranged before the unit is built, so call or email us first if you want it done.
If your piping wants to run rearward instead of out the sides, SpeedFactory builds the same 4.5 inch core as the DBD-1200 with dual backdoor tanks. Same core, same rating, different routing. Pick on geometry, not on cooling.
