SpeedFactory Rising Sun Baffled Oil Catch Can

On a boosted or heavily built motor, the crankcase pushes a lot of oily blow-by vapor out of the breather, and without a catch can that mist ends up coating your intake tract and, worse, your intercooler and valves. The SpeedFactory Rising Sun catch can gives that vapor somewhere to go. It is internally baffled, so as the crankcase air routes through it, the oil and moisture condense and drop out into the can instead of getting recirculated or making a mess of the bay. It is a clean, well-built piece of a proper breather setup for a high-performance Honda, and the laser-cut Rising Sun logo doubles as the vent.

Each one ships with the aluminum mounting bracket already attached. The compact 9 by 5 by 4.5 inch footprint is shaped to drop into the factory battery tray on a 92-00 Civic or 94-01 Integra, but because it mounts by that bracket and fits a small footprint, plenty of people run it on other builds, D, B, and K series swaps included, anywhere you have got the room for it. That flexibility is part of why it is a popular can.

Read this first: off-road use only

You need to know this before you buy, because it determines whether this can is even legal on your car. This setup deletes the factory PCV system and vents the crankcase oil vapors to the atmosphere through the laser-cut logo. That open-to-atmosphere breather design is why SpeedFactory positions this as an off-road and race part, not a street-legal one. In any area with emissions testing or PCV requirements, a vent-to-atmosphere catch can like this will not pass and is not street legal. If your car needs to pass an emissions inspection, this is not the right setup for it. If you have a track, race, or off-road build where that is not a concern, this is exactly the kind of no-compromise breather those cars want.

Fitment

This can is shaped to drop into the factory battery tray on the cars below, but it is semi-universal, the mounting bracket and compact footprint let it work on many other builds that have room for a 9 by 5 by 4.5 inch can.

The Civic and Integra fit is a direct drop into the battery tray. For any other application, it mounts by its bracket wherever you have the space and access to plumb it.

What to know before you buy

First, if you are running it in the Civic or Integra battery tray, that means the battery is moving. Like the other battery-location cans, using the tray means you will need to have relocated the battery, most people running these have moved it to the trunk. If you are mounting the can elsewhere on a different build, this does not apply, but plan your mounting spot before you order so you know it fits.

Second, plan the plumbing. The can uses -10AN fittings, but the hoses and AN lines to connect it to your valve cover and breather are sold separately. Budget for the SpeedFactory hose and fitting kit or your own -10AN lines so you are not left with the can mounted and no way to run it.

Third, this is a vented breather can, not a recirculating PCV-retaining setup. It condenses and collects the oil that blow-by carries out, which keeps your intake tract clean, and you empty the collected oil periodically as part of maintenance. Check it when you do your oil, and drain it before it fills. On a hard-run motor that catches a meaningful amount of oil, which is exactly the point, so it stays out of your intake.
