A K20 or K24 with the throttle body on one side of the bay and the turbo on the other wants an intercooler that takes air in on one end and sends it out the other. That's what the SpeedFactory Racing HP Vertical Flow Intercooler in its opposing side configuration does: a 27 inch long, 4.5 inch thick vertical flow core rated for 1000 horsepower, with the 3 inch inlet on one end and the 3 inch outlet on the opposite end so your charge piping runs the shortest possible route across the front of the car.

What It Is and Why It Works

Vertical flow means the charge air runs top to bottom through the core rather than side to side, which lets SpeedFactory use a long, short core that fills the bumper opening on most Honda and Acura chassis instead of a tall block that fights the radiator for space. The 27 by 6 by 4.5 inch bar and plate core is the HP version, up from the 3 inch thick 800 hp core, and SpeedFactory rates it at 1000 horsepower. The end tanks are low volume and smooth flowing, hand-formed from 5052 aluminum and TIG welded, so there's less dead air for the turbo to fill on spool and the charge gets into the core quickly.

The opposing side layout is the choice for a K-series setup where the turbo sits on the passenger side and the throttle body points the other way, or for a sidewinder manifold that puts the compressor outlet on the driver's side. Inlet and outlet are 3 inch bead rolled ends and that's the only size SpeedFactory offers on this core. M8 x 1.25 mounting bungs come welded on. If your turbo and throttle body plumbing live on the same side of the bay, SpeedFactory builds the identical core as the same side version, part number SF-06-098, and we carry that one too.

Sized for K-series Honda and Acura chassis. SpeedFactory states it fits most applications with slight modification; the 27 inch core is meant to fill the bumper opening on an EG, EK, DC2, EP3, RSX, or K-swapped chassis. Treat every install as a custom fit.

What to Know Before You Buy

Pick same side or opposing side by drawing your charge pipe route before you order, not after. The core is identical; only the tank layout differs, and the wrong one means a pipe that has to cross the whole front of the car. This is the layout question that decides whether the intercooler is easy or miserable to plumb.

The 27 inch length is what fills the bumper opening, and it's also what you have to clear. Measure between the frame rails and check the core support, and expect to trim the bumper beam on an EG, EK, or DC2. At 4.5 inches thick this core sits closer to the radiator than the 3 inch version, so shroud the radiator fan properly or you'll trade intake temps for coolant temps. Standard 3 inch silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps fit the bead rolled ends; Vanjen flanges have to be requested from SpeedFactory before the order is placed. If you're at 800 horsepower or less, SpeedFactory's standard vertical flow core is thinner, lighter, and easier to fit.
