SpeedFactory Racing HP Dual Backdoor Front Mount Intercooler DBD-1000 - Part #SF-06-086

The standard DBD-850 runs out of core somewhere in the high 800s, and if your B18 or K24 is heading past that on a big turbo and E85, the charge air is going to get hot before the tune does. The SpeedFactory Racing HP Dual Backdoor Front Mount Intercooler, SpeedFactory's DBD-1000, is the next step up: the same backdoor tank layout with a half inch thicker core, rated for 850 to 1000 horsepower.

What It Is and Why It Works

The core is a 25 by 12 by 3.5 inch bar and plate with SpeedFactory's staggered fin arrangement. Bar and plate is heavier than tube and fin but takes boost pressure and heat soak far better, which is why it's the right construction for a car that sees 30 plus psi on a hot lane. The extra half inch of core over the DBD-850 is more fin area for the same frontal footprint, so you get more cooling without needing a wider bumper opening.

The dual backdoor tanks are what make this intercooler easy to live with in a Honda. The 3 inch inlet and outlet exit the back of the end tanks instead of the sides, so your charge pipes run straight back toward the turbo and throttle body with fewer bends and fewer couplers. On an EG or EK with the bumper support cut, that's the difference between piping that clears the crank pulley and piping that fights it. The tanks are hand-formed 5052 aluminum, TIG welded in house, and M8 x 1.25 mounting bungs are already welded to the unit so you fabricate brackets to the bungs rather than drilling into a new core.

AllUniversalHonda / AcuraAnyAny turbo B, D, H, F, K, or J-Series

SpeedFactory states this fits most Honda and Acura chassis with modification. Measure the frame rails and core support before ordering; the overall width including tanks, not the core width, is what has to clear. On an EG, EK, DC2, EP3, or DC5 plan on trimming the bumper support and fabricating brackets to the welded M8 bungs.

What to Know Before You Buy

Pick the core by the power you'll actually make. The DBD-850 covers most turbo B and K street and drag cars. Buy this one when you're planning for 850 to 1000 and want headroom, and step to the HPX DBD-1200 only if you're going past that. Every step up adds core thickness you have to find room for between the bumper and the radiator, and on a tucked radiator setup the intercooler is now the first thing air hits. Sort your fan shrouding and ducting while the front end is apart or coolant temps will climb.

This is a universal core, not a bolt-in kit. The 32.5 inch overall width is the number that has to clear your frame rails. Standard silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps grip the bead rolled ends properly; if you want Vanjen quick-release flanges instead, that has to be arranged with SpeedFactory before the order because it's welded at build. These are built to order, so figure on a couple of weeks. If you're replacing the radiator at the same time, SpeedFactory sells this same core stacked with its tucked radiator as a combo, which is worth pricing against the two parts bought separately.
