SpeedFactory Air-to-Air Intercooler Core
You've got the turbo, you've got the manifold, and you've measured the bumper opening three times. What you need now is a core sized to your car, not a complete intercooler with end tanks pointed the wrong direction. These are bare bar and plate intercooler cores from SpeedFactory Racing in four sizes, so you or your fabricator can build the tanks around the exact package your EG, EK, DC2, or tube chassis car actually has room for.
What It Is and Why It Works
This is a core only. No end tanks, no inlet or outlet, no mounting tabs. What arrives is raw aluminum bar and plate stock with the staggered fin arrangement SpeedFactory specifies to hold cooling up while keeping pressure drop down. Bar and plate cores run a thicker side plate along the outer passages, and that plate is what gives you something solid to TIG end tanks onto without burning through into the fins.
Builders start with a core instead of a finished unit because of packaging. On a K20 or K24 swap in an EG or EK, the crash bar, condenser, and bumper support decide how much frontal area you really get, and a core with tanks you designed yourself will always tuck better than a universal front mount. SpeedFactory builds its own 800hp K-series vertical flow intercooler around the 3 inch version of this same core, which tells you where the design came from.
Thickness is where people talk themselves into the wrong part. More thickness means more charge volume and more cooling capacity, but it also makes the back half of the core harder to feed with ambient air and adds volume the turbo has to fill before boost arrives. The 3 and 3.5 inch cores are the sensible pick for a street or road course B-series or K-series build. The 4.5 and 6 inch cores are drag pieces, where you make one pass, heat soak never gets a chance to matter, and raw capacity wins.

Three of the four share the same 24 by 12 footprint and only change thickness, which makes stepping up or down easy once you've settled on a tank design. The 6 inch core is the outlier at 12 wide by 18 tall, a taller and narrower shape meant for a completely different mounting approach, so don't assume tanks built for the 24 inch cores will carry over.

There's no year, make, or model list on a bare core because nothing about it is vehicle specific. What matters is the space you have. Measure the opening between your frame rails, then measure again with the radiator and condenser where they'll actually sit, and remember that end tanks typically add somewhere in the range of 4.5 to 5 inches to the overall length in the direction the charge air flows. That number catches people out more than any other on a first custom build.
What to Know Before You Buy
Be honest with yourself about the fabrication. This is a raw core and nothing else. If you don't have a TIG welder and real experience running aluminum, or a shop you trust to do it, budget for that work before you buy the core. Welding thin fin material to thicker plate is not a place to learn, and a bad weld on an intercooler shows up as a boost leak you'll chase for a month.
Clean the core before anyone strikes an arc on it. Raw aluminum picks up oil and handling residue in shipping, and contamination is the most common reason a first attempt at end tanks comes out porous.
Don't buy on horsepower rating alone. Those numbers assume the core is getting real airflow through it, which means a bumper opening that actually feeds it and a radiator arrangement that isn't dumping hot air straight into the fins. A 3.5 inch core mounted where air can get to it will beat a 4.5 inch core buried behind a stack of other heat exchangers. Pick the thinnest core that covers your power target, then spend the difference on getting air to it.
Plan the rest of the job at the same time. You'll need silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps, charge piping in the right diameter for your power level, aluminum sheet or spun tanks, and material for mounting tabs. On the 4.5 and 6 inch cores especially, check crash bar and condenser clearance before you commit, because those two are where a thick core stops fitting on a street car.
