Got a reusable cotton air filter? Then you've got to clean and re-oil it every so often to keep it doing its job, and this is the kit that does both. How The Oil Actually Works

Here's the clever part. This isn't just greasy oil slapped on a filter. It's a lightweight, sensor-friendly lubricant that puts a positive magnetic charge (an ionic bond) onto your filter's stainless steel mesh. Dust particles carry a negative charge, so that positively charged mesh actually pulls them in and makes them stick, grabbing particles as small as 5 microns before they ever reach the cotton. That's the whole trick: the mesh catches the fine stuff so your cotton stays clear and keeps flowing big air. And because it's designed to be sensor-friendly, it's made to play nice with your MAF instead of gunking it up.

When To Clean Your Filter

PRL's recommendation is simple: take a look at your filter every oil change and check whether you can still see the screen through it. As long as the screen's visible, you're good. Once you can't see it anymore, or once you hit 30,000 miles, whichever comes first, it's time to clean and recharge. And if you're driving in dusty conditions or off-road, plan on cleaning it more often, since it'll load up with dirt a lot faster out there.

How To Recharge Your Filter

1. Pre-clean: Tap the filter or blow it out with air to knock off the loose dirt first.
2. Apply cleaner: Spray the filter down with the cleaner and let it soak in for about 15 minutes.
3. Rinse: Rinse it with warm water, going from the clean side to the dirty side so you flush the dirt back out the way it came in.
4. Dry: Let it dry naturally. Don't rush it with heat, that can shrink the cotton.
5. Re-oil: Re-oil the filter using one spray per 2 square inches of filter. Go easy and don't over-oil it.

One Big Tip: Don't Over-Oil It

This is the mistake people make, so we'll say it plainly: more oil is not better. Drench the filter and all that excess oil can get pulled downstream onto your MAF sensor, and a fouled MAF means rough running, bad readings, and a check engine light. Stick to roughly one spray per 2 square inches, let it wick in evenly, and you'll get great filtration without any of the headaches. When in doubt, less is more.
