PRL Motorsports Intercooler Upgrade - 2017-2021 Civic Type R (FK8)

The FK8 heat soaks, and everyone who tracks one finds out. Once the factory intercooler saturates, charge air temperatures climb, the ECU pulls timing to protect against detonation, and the power fades pull after pull. This PRL unit runs a bar-and-plate core rated to 550+ horsepower with 85% more surface area, mounting in the factory location with no cutting, and it's CARB approved for all 50 states.

Legal In California

Worth leading with, because it's rare on an intercooler.

This carries CARB Executive Order D-878, which makes it 50 state legal, California included. If your Type R needs to pass inspection, this passes.

Most performance intercoolers can't make that claim. If you're in a CARB state and had assumed a bigger intercooler wasn't an option for you, this is the one that is.

What Heat Soak Costs You

The failure is gradual rather than dramatic, which is why it's easy to underestimate.

An intercooler that can't shed heat fast enough lets intake temperatures climb. Higher charge air temperature means higher cylinder temperature, which raises the risk of detonation, so the ECU pulls timing to protect the engine. Pulled timing means lost power.

In practice you get full power on the first pull and noticeably less by the third or fourth. It's worse with spirited driving and considerably worse once you've added power, since you're pushing more air through a core sized for factory output.

PRL measures a 50+°F drop in post-charge air temperature at peak and an average 32°F drop across conditions. That's the difference between power that fades and power that holds.

85% More Surface Area

The core is where it comes from.

PRL uses a dense bar-and-plate core measuring 26.5 x 3.5 x 7.25", rated to 550+ horsepower. Against the factory unit it increases surface area by 85% and internal flow by 83%.

Bar-and-plate construction matters here. It's more durable and more efficient at transferring heat than the tube-and-fin design in most factory intercoolers, which is why serious builds use it. More surface area means more opportunity for heat to leave the charge air, and more internal flow means less restriction feeding the engine.

It Gains Power On Its Own

Even before you account for the consistency benefit.

Bolting this on is worth 3 horsepower and 11 lb-ft, with major mid-range gains, purely from the improved flow and cooler denser air. It also spools the turbo faster, since a less restrictive core lets pressure build more readily.

But the peak figure understates it. The real value is that the fourth pull matches the first, which a dyno number at peak doesn't capture.

True Bolt-On, Factory Hardware

No cutting, no trimming, no fabrication.

It uses the factory mounting points, retains the factory intercooler bolts and hardware, and works with all the factory air ducts and shrouds. The billet machined aluminum end tanks maximize flow while looking the part, and the current design keeps your original hardware rather than requiring anything new.

Torque the intercooler to 18 ft-lb. No ECU calibration is required, since a better intercooler improves what the engine already does rather than changing how it's metered.

Pair It With The Charge Pipes

Where the system gets fully sorted.

This works with factory charge piping, but it pairs best with PRL's charge pipe upgrade kit. The charge pipes keep heat out of the air after it leaves the intercooler and flow more smoothly through the bends, so running both means the charge air stays cool the whole way from the cooler to the throttle body rather than picking heat back up on the way.

The intercooler is the bigger single improvement. The pipes finish the job.
