Description

Genuine Honda Clock Spring (Cable Reel Assembly) - 1996-1998 Civic CX & DX

This is the genuine Honda clock spring, officially the cable reel assembly, for the 1996-1998 Civic CX and DX 3-door. It's the coiled ribbon of wiring behind the steering wheel that keeps electrical connections live while the wheel turns. Because the wheel rotates but the wiring behind it can't, the clock spring winds and unwinds to maintain those connections through the full range of steering travel. It's what lets your airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls keep working no matter which way the wheel is turned.

What It Does

The clock spring carries power and signal across the rotating steering column to everything mounted in the wheel. On these Civics that means the driver's airbag and the horn, and it has to maintain those circuits whether the wheel is centered, at full lock, or anywhere in between. It's a wear item: every turn of the wheel flexes that ribbon, and over the years it eventually frays or breaks a conductor.

When You Need One

A failing clock spring usually shows itself a few ways: the SRS (airbag) warning light comes on and stays on, the horn stops working or works intermittently, or it only works at certain wheel positions. An airbag light in particular shouldn't be ignored, since it means the SRS system may not deploy correctly in a crash. If you've got the light and a dead or intermittent horn, a broken clock spring is a common cause, and replacing it with a genuine Honda unit restores those circuits correctly.

Center It On Install

This is the detail that matters most: the clock spring has to be centered before and during install. If it's installed off-center, the ribbon inside can run out of travel and tear the first time you turn the wheel lock to lock, ruining a brand-new part. Make sure the wheels are pointed straight ahead and the clock spring is centered per the service procedure before the steering wheel goes back on.

Work On The SRS Safely

You're working around the airbag system, so do it right. Disconnect the battery and let the SRS system power down before you remove the airbag or steering wheel, and follow the Honda service manual procedure. The airbag is a pyrotechnic device, so handle it with care and store it face-up while it's out of the car. If you're not comfortable working around the SRS system, this is a job for someone who is.

Why Genuine Honda

This is the factory Honda part, built to the correct fit and spec for the SRS and horn circuits on these cars. On a safety-system component, OEM is the right call, you want the part that's known to connect correctly and hold up, not a guess on an off-brand unit.

Fitment

1996-1998 Honda Civic CX and DX 3-door. Confirm your trim and body style before ordering, since clock springs can vary across trims and equipment.

If your CX or DX has an airbag light and a dead horn, the clock spring is a likely cause, and this genuine Honda cable reel assembly is the correct fix. Just center it on install, work around the airbag safely, and you'll have those circuits back the way they should be.
