PRODUCT DETAILS
Mishimoto Performance Air Intake (MMAI-CTR-17) - 2017-2021 Honda Civic Type R (FK8)
The FK8 is a seriously capable car from the factory, but it's still mass-produced, which means the intake was built to a cost and a noise target, not to let the K20C1 breathe its best. This Mishimoto intake fixes that: 42% less restriction, a measured 16.7 whp and 20.1 wtq, and it does it while keeping safe air-fuel ratios on the stock tune, no remap needed. You get real power, a genuinely aggressive intake tone, and it's CARB-legal, so California owners can run it too.
Real Power, No Tune
The gains are the headline, and they're honest dyno numbers.
This intake makes a measured 16.7 whp and 20.1 wtq over stock, real power from the K20C1, which responds well to better airflow. That's meaningful on an intake, not a token bump, and the torque gain especially changes how the car pulls.
Just as important, it makes that power while holding safe air-fuel ratios on the factory tune. No remap required, and no check engine light, because the MAF housing was engineered specifically to keep the fuel trims where the stock ECU expects them. That's the hard part of an intake done right, and it's why this one just works out of the box.
The Silicone Elbow Replaces A Real Restriction
This is where a big chunk of the flow gain comes from.
The factory intake hose is an accordion-style piece, that ribbed, flexible shape creates turbulence and restricts airflow right before it reaches the turbo. Mishimoto replaced it with a 5-layer silicone elbow reinforced with steel wire and heat-resistant fibers.
The steel reinforcement matters: it keeps the hose from collapsing or ballooning under the boost the K20C1 makes, so it holds its shape and its flow under load. The new elbow is also larger in diameter with a smooth interior, which is a big contributor to the full system's 42% flow increase over the stock airbox, filter, and elbow combined.
Sealed Airbox, Keeps The Cold Air
The airbox design is smarter than just "bigger."
The powder-coated black steel airbox is enclosed, so it keeps hot engine-bay air away from the filter, feeding the turbo cooler, denser air. That sealing is what separates a real intake from an open cone filter that heat-soaks and loses power the harder you drive.
Cleverly, it retains the factory rubber snorkel, which connects to the dedicated cold-air channel built into the FK8's hood. So the airbox is still drawing cold air from the front of the car through the hood's intake duct, exactly as Honda intended, just feeding a larger, freer-flowing filter. You get the cooler air and the bigger filter both.
Engineered MAF Housing
The part that makes it tune-free and trouble-free.
The MAF sensor measures incoming air so the ECU can set the fuel mixture, and a housing that flows air differently than the sensor expects causes bad readings, drivability problems, and check engine lights, the classic sign of a cheap intake. Mishimoto's CNC aluminum MAF housing is precision-adjusted to increase flow while keeping the airflow characteristics the MAF sensor needs, so the car reads correctly, stays in safe fuel trim, and runs CEL-free on the stock tune.
CARB-Legal
Important for California and other emissions-checked states.
This intake is CARB compliant and comes with a CARB sticker (EO# D-759-8), so it's 50-state legal and will pass a visual emissions inspection. A lot of intakes aren't CARB-legal, which makes them a problem in California, this one isn't, so you can run it and stay compliant.
OEM+ Look
The all-black color scheme, powder-coated airbox, black silicone elbow, and black mounting hardware, keeps a clean, factory-plus look under the hood rather than shouting for attention. It looks like it belongs on the car. And the freer-flowing path gives you an aggressive intake tone under acceleration, so you hear the turbo and induction the sealed factory box muffles.
About The Filter
It uses a Mishimoto high-flow oiled filter, which flows well and cleans up nicely. Standard oiled-filter upkeep applies: clean and re-oil it every 10,000 to 15,000 miles under normal driving, more often in dusty conditions. Worth noting the re-oil service isn't covered under warranty, though the intake itself is, for life.

Who Should Grab This
This is for the FK8 owner who wants a bolt-on that actually makes power, keeps the car running right on the stock tune, and stays emissions-legal. 16.7 whp and 20.1 wtq, 42% less restriction, a sealed airbox that keeps the factory cold-air feed, an aggressive tone, and a CARB sticker so it's legal everywhere. It's one of the best power-per-dollar mods on the FK8, and it's engineered so you're not chasing check engine lights afterward.
