Honda Civic Cabin Air Filter 01-05
Your 2001-2005 Civic CABIN filter lives in two narrow trays behind the glovebox. When those pads get dirty, the vents smell like old paper and the HVAC has to push through a clogged pair. A 2001-2005 Honda Civic cabin air filter job is two pads, each 8.875 x 4.375 x 1.125 in. One disposable from the parts counter is only half the job, and a 2006-up Civic pad is a completely different shape.
When that filter is dirty, this is the washable two-pad K&N that drops in. VF2022 is two pretreated filters in one box. They slide into both factory glovebox trays.
What It Is
Honda's factory cabin media is disposable paper, sold one pad at a time. You toss it when it clogs, then you buy another pair next year. VF2022 is the other trade. K&N uses washable non-woven synthetic in polyurethane frames, so you clean the same two pads and put them back. You give up the toss-and-replace habit. You take on a wash day, and you stop feeding the parts counter paper every season. The media is pretreated and electrostatically charged to hold dust. It is ready to install out of the box.
This is cabin air for the HVAC, not the engine air filter. It lives behind the glovebox and cleans the air that hits you and the evaporator. It does not go in the engine airbox and it will not make power. Do not oil these pads. K&N's cabin media is not the red oiled cotton from an engine filter, and the engine Recharger kit is the wrong chemistry. When they get dirty, wash them with K&N 99-6000 cabin cleaner and refresher, let them drain, then put them back.

The 7th-gen Civic is a two-pad glovebox job. Pull the old pair and measure. Two narrow pads at 8.875 x 4.375 x 1.125 in are VF2022. A 2006-up Civic switches to one larger pad. That is K&N VF2001 at 9.188 x 8.813 x 0.875 in. The 2016-2021 Civic is a different single pad again, K&N VF2033 at 8.25 x 8.063 x 1.125 in. An RSX takes VF2022 for 2002-2006 Base and Type-S. There is no 2001 US RSX and no 2001 US Civic Si. The US EP3 Si hatch starts in 2002 with the 2.0L. K&N also lists a 2002-2005 Civic Si 1.7L, which is the Canada-market Si sedan, not a US structured Si row. Official extra VF2022 applications include 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, and 1997-2005 Acura EL. Those stay off this Civic and RSX page.
What to Know Before You Buy
Open the glovebox and drop the side stops so the door swings down. You will see two narrow trays, not one big slot. Pull both factory pads. VF2022 fills both positions, so you are not hunting a second filter after the first one is in. Each pad only sits flush in one direction. If it is proud of the tray, you have it flipped. The whole job is a glovebox afternoon. No tools on most of these cars if the stops let go cleanly.
Wash both pads together. Spray K&N 99-6000 cabin cleaner, let it soak, then rinse from the clean side out until the water runs clear. Let them drain. A little damp is fine. Then hit the media with the refresher in that same kit so the electrostatic charge comes back. Do not reach for the red engine-filter oil. That kit is for oiled cotton in an airbox, and K&N's cabin instructions say to stay off it. If the vents still smell after a clean, look at the evaporator and the drain, not just the pads.
Match the year and trim above before you order. If you are staring at a Civic and you are not sure which generation you have, measure the old pads. Two skinny 8.875-inch filters are this box. One wide 9-inch filter is a 2006-up car and VF2001. One nearly-square 8.25-inch filter is a 2016-2021 car and VF2033. Paper is cheaper the first time and trash the next time you smell the vents. VF2022 is the pair you wash and keep on a 7th-gen Civic or a 2002-2006 RSX that you actually drive.
