Hybrid Racing Formula Cold Air Intake for the 2017 through 2021 Honda Civic Type R FK8
We started with a simple question: If we could put everything we wanted into one FK8 intake, what would it look like? It would make more power through the pull, bring out more turbo and induction sound under throttle, look like it belonged in the engine bay, make the filter easy to reach, and grow with you as you continue to modify your Civic Type R.
Three MAF housings, seven velocity stacks, several filters, flow-bench testing, 16 material and shielding samples, and 65 dyno pulls later, we had our answer: the Formula Intake. It is our formula for what we believe is the best intake for the FK8.
The first question most people ask about an intake is how much power it makes. So we will answer it directly, with three comparisons we ran on the same 2019 FK8, from the most dramatic result to the most true-to-life.
Just swap it: factory ECU untouched
We started simple. Factory airbox, untouched OEM Honda ECU. Then we installed the Formula 76 mm Street and changed nothing else. Power jumped from 270.2 to 300.2 wheel horsepower, with no check-engine light and no recorded knock correction. That 30-wheel-horsepower result honestly shocked us, because modern turbo cars are tightly controlled and a bolt-on intake is expected to do very little. It is not 30 horsepower from airflow alone. The changed MAF signal also moved the ECU's fueling and load calculations. Even so, it shows how much the car responded to the swap.

Add FlashPro: same Base Map, both intakes
Next we added Hondata FlashPro and ran both intakes on the same Base Map, before loading any Formula-specific MAF scaling. The curves stayed close through the middle of the pull, then the Formula carried more power toward redline. It is a useful real-world middle step, not the final tuned comparison.

Tuned right: the honest like-for-like
Finally, we set the MAF scaling correctly for each intake and tuned the car for each setup. This is the closest apples-to-apples comparison and the number to expect on a tuned FK8. The Formula averaged about 7 more wheel horsepower and 8 more lb-ft of torque from 2,500 to 6,800 rpm. More importantly, it made more usable power through most of the pull instead of only touching a higher peak.

That is the short answer. The complete FK8 Formula Intake dyno test puts all six runs side by side and digs into the MAF signal, the fuel correction, the area under each curve, the small calibration details, and our full test method, with interactive graphs you can line up and race against each other.

What MAF Housing Should I Use?
The Formula Intake comes in two versions. Choose the 76 mm Street for a stock or lightly modified FK8, whether the car still has the OEM Honda ECU or already has FlashPro. It can be installed without tuning, although we strongly recommend FlashPro or another tuning solution capable of setting the MAF scaling correctly. Choose the 89 mm Race for a higher-power build that needs more MAF sensor range so the ECU and tuner can continue to measure airflow accurately. Both versions use the same factory Honda MAF sensor; only the housing and its matching velocity stack change.
76 mm Street
The 76 mm Street is the right choice for most stock and lightly modified FK8s. It is the housing used for the comparisons above and can be installed with the factory ECU. If the car has FlashPro, use the correct Formula MAF scaling so the ECU reads the new intake path properly.
89 mm Race
The 89 mm Race is for higher-power builds that are approaching the factory MAF sensor's limit with the 76 mm Street, or for cars being built around a larger turbo and future power upgrades. It can be properly tuned for a lightly modified FK8, but it provides more sensor range than that setup needs. Around 400 wheel horsepower, have your tuner begin watching MAF voltage. The datalog, not the power number by itself, should make the final call.
On our 433.5-wheel-horsepower shop FK8, the 76 mm Street signal reached 4.96 volts and stopped climbing near the top of the pull. The 89 mm Race kept the same sensor within its measurement range. The 89 mm Race inlet requires Hondata FlashPro or an equivalent tuning solution capable of applying the matching MAF calibration.
More Sound, Easier Service
The factory airbox does a good job of muffling the intake. The Formula lets more of the K20C1 and turbo come through: a deeper induction note as the engine loads up, crisper turbo spool under throttle, and a sharper rush from the recirculating valve when you lift. It makes the car feel more alive when you get into it without creating constant noise at a steady speed. At cruise, the extra sound settles back down.
Release the two OEM-style quick-release clips and one clamp to inspect, service, or replace the filter without removing the airbox from the car. The red oiled-cotton filter is washable and reusable. Every 5,000 miles, clean it according to the service sticker, let it dry completely, then apply fresh filter oil sparingly. Avoid over-oiling near the MAF sensor.
Secondary Cold Air Intake Inlet
Flow-bench and dyno testing showed that the intake performed better with a second source of outside air, so we kept it in the production design. The Formula retains the factory grille feed, then adds two lower inlet tubes behind the bumper near the brake-duct area. Together, the two paths give the filter more inlet area and another supply of outside air instead of making the entire intake rely on the factory opening.
Built for the Heat
We kept the filter inside an enclosed airbox rather than leaving it exposed beside the radiator and turbo. The airbox is molded from XLPE, with a reflective shield on the side facing the turbo.
We compared 16 material and shielding samples before finalizing the airbox. In that bench test, XLPE picked up heat more slowly than aluminum, while the reflective material did the best job of rejecting radiant heat. Those results led us to use molded XLPE for the airbox and place a reflective shield on the side facing the turbo.
Complimentary Launch Edition Basemap
Direct-purchase Launch Edition kits with the 76 mm Street include a complimentary locked Hondata FlashPro basemap for 91-octane pump gas or better. The basemap was developed around the Hybrid Racing Formula 76 mm Street Intake and Hybrid Racing Formula Exhaust, with room for common bolt-on upgrades already installed or added later.
To request it, email Hybrid Racing with your order number, VIN, vehicle year, and complete modification list.
This is a conservative starting calibration, not a custom tune. The file cannot be edited or unlocked, but FlashPro datalogging remains available. If your car has additional modifications or you want to take the tune further for your local elevation, fuel quality, and operating conditions, contact us. We can work with you to find the right calibration and tuner for your setup.
The complimentary basemap is not offered for the 89 mm Race. Cars that need the larger housing usually have supporting modifications and already require custom tuning. There are too many possible parts combinations for one basemap to cover safely, so we do not provide a universal file for the Race housing. We can work with you and your tuner, or connect you with one, to get the right calibration for your car.
Fitment and Installation
The Formula fits every 2017 through 2021 Honda Civic Type R FK8, including the 2021 Limited Edition. It accepts the factory MAF sensor and reuses the factory mounting points, intake seal, and rubber grommets. No cutting, drilling, or front-bumper removal is required.
Most installations take 1 to 2 hours with basic hand tools. Installing the lower air feeds requires safely raising the front of the car, removing the driver-side front wheel, and pulling back the inner fender liner. Our detailed installation guide walks through each step. The included coupler fits the factory turbo inlet pipe and measures roughly 69 mm inside where it meets the inlet. If your car has an aftermarket turbo inlet, double-check its connection size before ordering because a different coupler may be required.

Formula Intake Questions
Does the Formula Intake require Hondata FlashPro or a tune?
The 76 mm Street can be installed with the factory ECU. We saw no check-engine lights on our test vehicle
during testing, and the factory-ECU log recorded no knock correction. For optimal performance, we recommend
using Hondata FlashPro to properly scale the factory MAF sensor for the Formula Intake. The 89 mm Race inlet
requires Hondata FlashPro or an equivalent tuning solution capable of applying the matching MAF calibration.
When should I choose the 89 mm Race?
Choose the 89 mm Race when datalogs show the 76 mm Street approaching the factory MAF sensor's 5.0-volt
limit, or when your build plan includes a larger turbo and substantially more power. The 89 mm Race can be
properly tuned for a lightly modified FK8, but it provides more sensor range than that setup needs. Choose it
when the car needs the additional range now or you have clear plans for those upgrades. Around 400 wheel
horsepower, have your tuner begin watching MAF voltage. The log, not the power number by itself, should make
the final call.
Can I change from the 76 mm Street to the 89 mm Race later?
Yes. Both versions use the same airbox, filter, outside-air feeds, coupler, and factory Honda MAF sensor.
Converting later requires the other MAF housing, its matching velocity stack, and a tuning solution.
Will the Formula Intake cause a check engine light?
We saw no check-engine lights on our test vehicle during testing. Modifications, elevation, environmental
conditions, and calibration choices can all affect how the FK8's ECU responds. For optimal performance, use
Hondata FlashPro to properly scale the factory MAF sensor for the Formula Intake.
