Here's Why You Need to Replace These Seals

When you remove your timing cover, you're disturbing all the seals and O-rings that seal the timing cover to your engine block. The front crank seal sits in your timing cover and it seals your crankshaft where it comes through the cover. The rear crank seal sits in your engine block behind your flywheel. The O-rings seal the timing cover to the block, the crank position sensor, and the VTC (Variable Timing Control) solenoid. Once you remove your timing cover, these seals and O-rings have been compressed against the mating surfaces for years. When you unbolt everything, the seals lose tension and the O-rings flatten out. Note: Replace all the seals and O-rings in this kit whenever you remove your timing cover. Don't reuse old seals - they won't seal properly and you'll have oil leaks. When you're installing the front crank seal, make sure it's seated flush in the timing cover. If it's cocked or sitting crooked, it'll leak. Use a seal driver or a socket that's the same diameter as the seal to press it in straight. Lubricate the seal lips with fresh engine oil before you install your crankshaft pulley. If the seal's dry, you can damage it when you slide the pulley on. When you're installing the rear crank seal, clean the seal bore in the engine block thoroughly. Any dirt or old seal residue will cause the new seal to leak. Torque your timing cover bolts to spec in the correct sequence. If you don't torque them right, the cover can warp and you'll get oil leaks at the O-ring.
