Honda K20Z3/K24A Valve Cover Gasket Set - 12030-RTA-000
Your valve cover's leaking oil down the side of the engine or you've pulled your spark plugs and they're soaked in oil? Part number 12030-RTA-000 is the complete OEM valve cover gasket set for K20Z1, K20Z3, K23A1, K24A1, and K24A4 engines. You're getting one valve cover gasket, four spark plug tube seals, and six valve cover bolt grommets. Everything you need to stop the leaks. The valve cover gasket seals the cover to the head, the tube seals keep oil out of the spark plug wells, and the bolt grommets seal around each valve cover bolt. Replace all three at once and your valve cover stops leaking.
Here's What Each Seal Does
The valve cover gasket's the main seal. It runs around the whole perimeter of the valve cover where it meets the head. When it gets old and hard, oil seeps past it and runs down the engine. You'll see oil streaks on the side of the block or oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold. The four spark plug tube seals sit at the top of each spark plug tube where the valve cover meets the tube opening. Oil lives above these seals in the valve cover. When the seals fail, oil drips down the tubes and pools around your spark plugs. Pull a plug and it's covered in oil. That's a failed tube seal. The six bolt grommets seal around the valve cover bolts. The bolts go through the valve cover and thread into the head. Without grommets, oil leaks up around the bolts and seeps out the top of the valve cover. All three seals work together. One fails and you've got oil leaking somewhere.
Don't Replace One Seal and Leave the Rest
People pull the valve cover to fix a gasket leak and they reuse the old tube seals and grommets. Big mistake. If your valve cover gasket's failed, the tube seals and grommets are the same age and they're not far behind. You replace the gasket, button everything up, and three months later you've got oil on your spark plugs or oil seeping from the bolt holes. Now you're pulling the valve cover off again to replace the seals you should've replaced the first time. Replace everything while the cover's off. This complete set's got all the seals you need. You're not ordering three separate part numbers or dealing with pieces showing up at different times. One kit, all the seals, done.
Required Every Time You Pull the Valve Cover
If you're pulling the valve cover for any reason, you need fresh seals. Valve cover gasket work, cam swaps, valve adjustments, head work, doesn't matter. The seals don't reuse. Once you've unbolted the valve cover and disturbed the seals, they're done. The gasket's been compressed for years and it won't seal the same way twice. The tube seals are rubber that's been sitting in hot oil. They're hard and brittle. The grommets are the same story. Install fresh seals or you're chasing oil leaks after reassembly. The seals are cheap. The labor to pull the valve cover twice isn't.

Note: Clean the valve cover and head surfaces completely before installing new seals. Any old gasket material left behind causes leaks. Press the four tube seals into the grommets at the top of the spark plug tubes in the valve cover. Make sure they're seated all the way. Install the six bolt grommets in the valve cover bolt holes. Set the new valve cover gasket on the head, drop the valve cover on top, and start all the bolts finger tight. Torque them in the factory sequence to around 9 ft-lbs. Don't crank them down or you'll crush the gasket. Run the engine and check for leaks around the valve cover.
