Honda J Series V6 Crank Pulley Key (Woodruff Key) - 90704-RCA-A00
Doing a timing belt job on your J series V6? You need a new crank pulley key. The Honda J series crank pulley key (part number 90704-RCA-A00) is the small half-moon shaped key that locks your crank pulley to your crankshaft. It sits in a slot in your crankshaft and it's what keeps your crank pulley from spinning on the shaft. When you pull your crank pulley off for timing belt work, you're supposed to replace this key. Don't reuse it. Old keys wear out and they'll shear off if they're damaged.
Here's What This Key Actually Does
Your crank pulley key (some people call it a woodruff key) sits in a half-circle slot that's cut into your crankshaft. Half the key's in the crankshaft slot, half is in a matching slot in your crank pulley. That's what locks your pulley to your crank so they spin together. Without this key, your crank pulley would just spin on your crankshaft and nothing would work. No alternator, no power steering, no A/C. When your key wears down or shears off, your crank pulley slips. You'll hear knocking and your accessories stop working.
Replace It Every Single Time
Any time you're pulling your crank pulley off for timing belt work, water pump replacement, or front main seal work, replace this key. It's two bucks. Takes five seconds to pop in. If you reuse an old key that's worn or damaged and it shears off while you're driving, your crank pulley's going to slip. When that happens, your timing belt can jump timing. That's valves smashing into pistons. That's a destroyed motor. Don't reuse old keys just to save two dollars.

Note: Replace this key every time you pull your crank pulley off. Don't reuse old keys. They're cheap and if they're worn they'll shear. When you're installing the new key, make sure it's seated all the way down in the crankshaft slot. If it's sticking up even a little, your crank pulley won't sit flush and you'll have problems. Clean out the crankshaft slot and the pulley slot before you install the new key. If there's old key material or crud in there, get it out. Torque your crank pulley bolt to spec when you put everything back together. If that bolt's not torqued right, your pulley can work loose and your key will shear.
