What It Does And Why You Replace It
Here's the job this little bushing handles. It sits in the center of the crank and supports the tip of your transmission's input shaft, keeping it centered and spinning true. When it wears out, you start feeling it: notchy or hard shifts (especially trying to get into gear at a stop), a clutch that won't fully release, and sometimes a noise to go with it. The thing is, it wears out right alongside your clutch, so bolting a brand-new clutch up against a worn pilot bushing is asking for trouble, you'll be fighting shift problems on a fresh clutch.
