Honda Civic/Fit/TSX Steering Wheel Bolt - 90161-SV4-003
Installing an aftermarket steering wheel or doing airbag work on your Honda or Acura? This is the OEM bolt that secures your steering wheel to the steering column shaft. Part number 90161-SV4-003. It threads into the end of your steering column and clamps your steering wheel hub down tight. When you're swapping to an aftermarket wheel, upgrading your hub, or you've pulled your wheel for airbag or clockspring work, you're supposed to replace this bolt. It's a one-time use fastener. The threads deform when you torque it down and it won't hold to spec if you reuse it. Fresh bolt keeps your steering wheel from coming loose while you're driving. That's a safety issue you don't mess around with.
Here's Why You Can't Reuse This Bolt
This steering wheel bolt's designed for one installation. When you torque it to spec (usually around 36-37 ft-lbs), the threads stretch and deform slightly to create maximum clamping force. That deformation locks the bolt in place and keeps your steering wheel tight. If you back the bolt out and try to reuse it, the stretched threads won't engage properly. The bolt won't torque to spec and your steering wheel can work loose. A loose steering wheel while you're driving is dangerous. The wheel can slip on the shaft or wobble. In extreme cases it can come off completely. Don't reuse steering wheel bolts. Replace them every time you pull your wheel.
Critical for Aftermarket Wheel Installs
If you're installing an aftermarket steering wheel (Sparco, Momo, NRG, etc.), you need this bolt. Most aftermarket wheel kits don't include the steering wheel bolt. They give you the hub adapter and the wheel, but you're on your own for the bolt. Don't try to reuse your old bolt or substitute some random bolt from the hardware store. The steering wheel bolt's a specific length and thread pitch. Wrong bolt means your wheel's not secured properly. Order the OEM Honda bolt and do it right.
Replace It During Airbag or Clockspring Work
Pulling your steering wheel to replace your airbag, fix your horn, or swap your clockspring? Replace this bolt when you're putting everything back together. It's cheap and it's critical for safety. Don't save $10 on a bolt that holds your steering wheel on. The bolt's been torqued down for years. Even if it looks fine, the threads are stretched. Replace it and know your steering wheel's not going anywhere.
