Genuine Honda Timing Belt - B16A & B17A

The timing belt is the part that keeps your engine's valves and pistons in sync, and on an interference engine like the B16 or B17, it's not a part you let go, if it breaks, the valves and pistons collide and the engine is done. This is the genuine Honda replacement, a direct-fit belt for the B16A and B17A. It's a scheduled maintenance item, and it's the anchor of the front-of-engine service you do at the interval.

Do The Whole Job At Once

The most important thing about a timing belt, so it leads.

Replacing the timing belt means removing the front of the engine, the crank pulley, covers, and tension off the belt, which is the labor-intensive part. Several other parts live right there behind the belt and are only accessible with it off, so the smart, standard practice is to do them all together.

At minimum, replace the water pump and the timing belt tensioner at the same time as the belt. The water pump is belt-driven and sits behind the belt; the tensioner keeps the belt at correct tension and wears alongside it. If you replace just the belt and reuse an old pump or tensioner, and one fails before the next interval, you're pulling the whole front of the engine apart again to replace a part you could have done the first time.

Doing the belt, pump, and tensioner as one job, plus a fresh crank pulley bolt and key since the pulley's off, is how you get a timing and cooling system you can trust for the full next interval rather than gambling on aging parts.

Why You Don't Let A B-Series Belt Go

Worth understanding, because the consequence of neglecting it is severe.

The B16 and B17 are interference engines, meaning the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times, kept apart only by the timing belt holding everything in sync. If the belt snaps or jumps, that synchronization is lost, and the pistons hit the open valves.

The result is bent valves at best, and often far worse, a destroyed head or engine, from a belt that costs very little to replace on schedule. That's why the timing belt is a strict-interval maintenance item on these engines, not a run-until-it-breaks part. Replacing it on time is cheap insurance against a catastrophic, expensive failure.

Genuine Honda, The Right Belt For The Interval

On a part your engine's survival depends on, quality matters.

This is the OEM Honda belt, made to the correct specification for these engines and built to last the full service interval. A cheap aftermarket belt is a poor gamble on a part where failure means engine damage, the genuine belt is what you want holding your valvetrain in time. It's a direct-fit replacement, installed as part of the standard timing service.
