Rubber brake lines flex and expand under braking pressure, and that expansion is what you feel as a soft, spongy pedal, part of your foot pressure is stretching the lines instead of applying the brakes. It gets worse the harder and more repeatedly you brake, and as the factory rubber ages.

The stainless braid around these Goodridge lines doesn't expand the way rubber does, so all your pedal pressure goes straight to the calipers.
