Your crankshaft doesn't spin smoothly. Every combustion event hits it with a torque spike, and those spikes set up torsional vibration, a twisting oscillation running the length of the crank. At certain rpm those vibrations hit resonance and the loads get destructive fast. On an engine that revs to 8,300 or 9,000 rpm, that's not a theoretical problem, it's the reality your bottom end lives with every time you use the top of the tach. This Fluidampr replaces the stock damper with a viscous steel unit built to control those vibrations across the entire rev range.
Why The Stock Damper Isn't Enough On An F-Series
A factory elastomer damper is tuned to one narrow frequency band. Honda picked that band based on the stock rotating assembly and the stock rev range, and within those parameters it works fine. Two things break that assumption.
The first is rpm. The S2000 already spends time at rpm most engines never see, and torsional vibration gets worse the harder you spin the crank. The second is modification. Change your pistons or rods and you've changed the mass of the rotating assembly, which shifts the resonant frequencies. Your stock damper is still tuned for the old numbers. That's how people end up with cracked cranks and spun bearings on engines that looked perfectly healthy on paper.
There's also a wear factor. Elastomer dampers degrade. The rubber hardens, dries, and eventually delaminates, and a damper that's aged out isn't damping much of anything. On a car that's now fifteen to twenty-five years old, that's worth thinking about even if the engine is stock.
How A Viscous Damper Works Differently
Fluidampr uses a sealed steel housing containing a free-floating inertia ring suspended in high-viscosity silicone. When the crank oscillates, that inertia ring resists the motion and shears through the silicone, converting the vibration into heat that dissipates through the steel body.
The important part is that it isn't tuned to one frequency. It responds to whatever the crank is doing, across the whole spectrum, which means it keeps working when you change the rotating assembly, add power, or extend your rev range. That's the fundamental advantage over an elastomer damper, and it's why this is the right choice for a built or hard-driven F-series.
Steel also handles heat far better than rubber, so it doesn't degrade sitting in a hot engine bay year after year.
SFI 18.1 Rated
This carries an SFI 18.1 rating, which matters for two reasons. Practically, it means the damper has passed a recognized safety standard for a component spinning at crank speed. And competitively, plenty of sanctioning bodies require an SFI-rated damper for tech inspection. If your S2000 sees any organized racing, that certification isn't optional, and it's worth having regardless.
Degree Markings For Timing
The damper is engraved with timing marks at TDC, BDC, and 7, 9, 11, and 15 degrees. Engraved rather than printed, so they don't wear off or get lost under grime. If you're setting timing or verifying it during a build, having accurate marks right there saves real time and guesswork.

Mounting hardware isn't included. Plan on reusing your factory bolt or sourcing the correct hardware. Don't improvise on a crank bolt.
