PRODUCT DETAILS

Exedy OEM Clutch Master Cylinder for 2001-2005 Civic - Part #MC553

Pedal sinking to the floor, engagement point wandering from one stop to the next, fluid on the carpet under the dash: that's the master. Exedy's MC553 is the OE-style replacement for the 2001-2005 Civic with the D17 and a manual, built by the same company that supplies Honda's clutch hardware, so it's the fix that makes the car feel like it did before the seals gave up.

What It Is and Why It Works

The master is the hydraulic pump on the firewall. Pedal pushes the piston, pressure goes down the line to the slave on the transmission, slave moves the fork. When the bore wears or the cup seals harden, pressure bleeds past the piston and the pedal goes soft and inconsistent. Nothing else fixes that except a new cylinder.

MC553 keeps the factory bore size and stroke, so pedal effort and engagement range stay stock. It's not a ratio change and it's not sold as a feel upgrade. Aluminum body, EPDM seals, honed bore. Exedy GlobalParts is the old Daikin Clutch USA operation, and these are the same units that go into the box under the Honda part number.

What to Know Before You Buy

Replace the slave at the same time if it's original. A new master pushing against a 20-year-old slave usually means bleeding the system twice. Exedy SC896 is the matching slave.

Plan on a full bleed with fresh DOT 3. The reservoir is shared with the brake system on these cars, so keep it topped up while you bleed or you'll pull air into the brake side too.

Check the pedal freeplay spec after install. A master that's adjusted with no freeplay never fully returns and will wear the new seals out early.

2002-2006 Acura RSX Type-SK20A2, K20Z1, 6-speed
2006-2011 Honda Civic SiK20Z3, 6-speed
2002-2005 Honda Civic SiK20A3, 5-speed

Any K-swap using one of these transmissions with a 24-spline input shaft takes this kit.
