Driveshaft Shop Level 0 Axle Set - 1988-1991 Civic & CRX (Y1 Cable)

EFs are thirty-five years old now and original axles have long since earned their retirement. The usual replacement options aren't great: cheap rebuilds put new boots on a worn core, and generic aftermarket axles are a gamble on a car this age. This is Driveshaft Shop's Level 0, built as a proper alternative to both, with a chromoly center bar, billet inner CV, and an outer CV design genuinely better than what Honda used. Sold as a left and right pair.

Y1 Transmission Only, and Here's How To Check

Read this before ordering, because it's the one thing that determines fitment and there's a way to verify it.

These fit the Y1 cable transmission only. Look at your intermediate bar hanger bracket, and if the casting reads SH3, you've got a Y1.

That's a physical check rather than a guess, and it's worth doing. B-series cable transmissions came in several variants across these years, and on a car that's been apart as many times as most EFs have, the box in it isn't necessarily what left the factory.

The Outer CV Is Genuinely Better Than Factory

This is the standout engineering detail and it's worth understanding.

Honda's factory outer CV uses a dual arc design, which has a known tendency to wear out prematurely. Driveshaft Shop's outer is custom made with a single arc design instead, and it addresses that wear pattern directly. Combined with a new heat treat on the 1117 billet outer, it's a meaningful improvement over the part you're removing.

If your car has developed a click on turns, that's the outer CV telling you it's done. Replacing it with the same design that wore out is how you end up doing this again.

Better Than A Rebuild

Worth being clear about, because rebuilt axles are the obvious cheaper alternative and they're usually the wrong call.

A rebuild is a used core with new boots and grease. Whatever wear existed inside is still there, and on a car built in the late eighties that's three and a half decades of unknown history. You're buying a part that already failed once and hoping the second run goes better.

This is new throughout. Chromoly center bar, real billet inner CV with an oversized tripod, and the redesigned outer. Those aren't things you find on a rebuild or a budget aftermarket axle, and they're why this outlasts what it's replacing.

Be Clear On What This Is

Driveshaft Shop is unusually direct about positioning, and we'd rather repeat it than let you find out later.

This is not a racing axle. It's a superior stock replacement and swap axle, better than any rebuild or budget aftermarket option, but it isn't built for competition-level power.

There's no horsepower rating and no warranty against breakage. That's Driveshaft Shop's own position on the Level 0 line, not fine print we're glossing over.

For a stock or moderately built EF, that's exactly right and there's no reason to spend more. If you're making serious power, Driveshaft Shop's higher tiers are where to look.

Removable ABS Rings

Small detail that gives you options. The axles include ABS rings and they're removable, so you can leave them on if your car uses them or pull them if your build has moved past the factory setup.

Check Your Range Of Motion After Install

Worth doing, particularly if the car is lowered or swapped.

Once fitted, cycle the suspension through full travel and turn to full lock both directions. You're checking that the inner joint isn't bottoming out at compression or over-extending at droop, and that everything clears through the steering range.

On a stock height car this is a quick sanity check. On a lowered or modified EF it matters more, since the axle is working through angles Honda didn't plan for.

Fitment

Y1 cable transmission only. Verify by checking for SH3 on the intermediate bar hanger bracket casting. Part number 510008 / 510009. Includes left and right axles with removable ABS rings.

Who Should Run These

This is for the EF owner whose axles have started clicking, and for the builder who wants quality pieces without race axle money. These cars are getting harder to find in decent shape, which makes doing the job properly worth more than it used to be. Check your hanger bracket for the SH3 casting, fit them, check your travel, and drive it.
