PRODUCT DETAILS

Denso Starter Motor (280-0324) - 2001-2005 Honda Civic DX/EX/LX (D17A1 & D17A2)

When your Civic cranks slow or clicks without turning over, the starter is usually the cause. This is a Denso remanufactured starter, and what matters is that Denso remanufactures it to the standard of the company that builds these for the factory. It's a thorough reman, not a cheap rebuild, which is why Denso starters have some of the lowest return rates in the aftermarket.

Fits Both The VTEC And Non-VTEC D17

Worth confirming, since the non-Si Civic came with two versions of the D17.

The D17A1 is the non-VTEC engine in the DX and LX. The D17A2 is the VTEC engine in the EX. This starter fits both, so whichever D17 you have, you're covered.

Go by your engine code if you're not sure, but across the DX, EX, and LX non-Si trims for these years, this is the starter.

No Core Charge

Worth calling out, because it's cleaner than the usual reman arrangement.

Most remanufactured parts carry a core charge, a deposit you pay up front and get back only after shipping your old unit in. Hybrid Racing covers the core on this one, so there's no core charge and nothing to send back. The price you see is the price, and you're not chasing a refund after the fact.

Denso Reman Is Done Right

Worth understanding, because remanufactured quality varies enormously and this sits at the top of it.

A cheap reman is a used core with the obvious failures swapped and little else verified. Denso's process is exhaustive, and the list is worth reading because it's what you're paying for:

  • Solenoid coil 100% voltage tested
  • Armature cleaned and high-voltage tested
  • Field coil inspected and high-voltage tested
  • Commutator polished, gauged, and performance tested
  • Terminal bolts replated or replaced with copper for a clean electrical path
  • Housing re-tapped to OE standards, damage-checked for heat warping and corrosion, then refinished
  • Pinion gear inspected and replaced as needed
  • All-new bearings, brushes, and seals

Every unit is bench-tested to confirm factory-original performance before it ships. That rigor is why these come back so rarely, and it's the difference between a starter that lasts and a rebuild that's a gamble.

Cranks In Any Weather

A starter has to work the same on a freezing morning and after a hot restart, and a tired one fails at the extremes first.

This is designed for maximum cranking torque in both extreme cold and heat, so it turns the engine over reliably whether you're starting cold in winter or restarting hot in summer traffic. All-new bearings and brushes are part of what keeps that cranking consistent rather than fading as the unit wears.

The Responsible Choice Too

Worth a mention, since it's a genuine upside of reman.

Remanufacturing recycles the valuable components and raw materials in a starter rather than scrapping them, which makes a quality reman the environmentally responsible option as well as the value one. You're getting factory-original performance without the resource cost of an entirely new unit.

Direct OE Replacement

This replaces the factory starter directly on the D17-equipped non-Si Civic. Standard rotation, aluminum mounting block, and it bolts in where the original came out with no adapting.

Denso's First Time Fit standard means the right part and the right fit the first time, which on a starter matters, since a unit that doesn't seat or align correctly is a frustrating job to redo.

Rule Out The Simple Stuff First

Worth checking before you replace the starter, so you're fixing the right thing.

Slow cranking, a single click, or intermittent no-starts can come from a weak battery or corroded terminals as easily as a bad starter, and those are far cheaper to fix. Test your battery and clean your connections first. If they're good and the starter is still struggling, grinding, or clicking, then this is the fix.

Who Should Grab This

This is for the non-Si Civic owner whose starter is cranking slow, clicking, or failing to engage, and who wants a properly remanufactured Denso unit rather than a cheap rebuild that fails again. It fits both the VTEC and non-VTEC D17, it's exhaustively tested, built to crank in any weather, and there's no core to send back. Check your battery and connections, swap it in, and get reliable starts back.
