Description

COBB Tuning Front Mount Intercooler Kit - 2023-2027 Honda Civic Type R (FL5) & 2024-2027 Acura Integra Type S (DE5)

The intercooler is one of the most important upgrades on a turbocharged car, and the COBB Front Mount Intercooler Kit addresses the FL5 Civic Type R and DE5 Integra Type S where the factory unit runs out of room. The stock intercooler actually flows well, but its cooling capacity is limited, so under sustained hard driving it heat-soaks: it simply can't shed heat fast enough, charge temperatures climb, and the car quietly pulls timing and loses power as the run goes on. COBB's kit is a direct bolt-in that massively increases cooling capacity, so the car makes consistent power instead of fading as things get hot, even at stock power levels.

What an Intercooler Actually Does

When the turbo compresses air, it heats that air up, and hot air is less dense, carries less oxygen, and makes the engine far more prone to knock. The intercooler sits between the turbo and the engine to pull that heat back out before the charge reaches the cylinders, so you get denser, cooler air and more reliable timing. The number that matters isn't just how well it flows, it's how well it keeps charge temps down lap after lap or pull after pull. That's exactly where the factory unit struggles and where a bigger core earns its keep: resisting heat-soak so your tenth hard pull makes the same power as your first.

A Garrett Core, 101% Larger

The kit is built around a high-quality Garrett intercooler core that's 101% larger than the factory unit, measuring 26.2" x 7" x 4.25". That extra core volume is the cooling capacity that keeps charge temps in check under load. At each end sit bespoke COBB cast aluminum end tanks, designed and optimized so the air path disperses evenly across the whole core rather than rushing through one section; that even distribution is what lets you actually use all that core without choking airflow. The result is a big jump in heat management without giving up flow.

Charge Piping

On either side of the core, the kit runs 2.5" mandrel-bent aluminum tubing finished in wrinkle-black powder coat. Mandrel bends keep the tube's full diameter through every curve rather than crimping down at the bends, so the charge air isn't restricted on its way through. Custom silicone couplers and constant-tension clamps tie it all together, keeping the connections compliant and leak-free as everything heat-cycles.

Mounting and Install

This is a bolt-in upgrade that fits right where the factory intercooler lives, with no modification needed on the Type R and only minimal modification on the Type S. One honest detail worth knowing: an all-aluminum core and end tanks weigh a bit more than the factory aluminum-and-plastic unit, so COBB designed in-house billet upper mounts and includes new bushings for both the upper and lower mounts to properly support the heavier assembly. That's the difference between a kit that just fits and one that stays put and sealed over the long haul.

Works on the Stock Tune

Unlike an intake, this intercooler doesn't change how the car meters airflow, so it's safe and effective on your completely stock tune; you can bolt it on and immediately get the heat-soak resistance without touching the ECU. It's also fully compatible with COBB's Off The Shelf maps, so when you go further with tuning down the road, the intercooler is already in place supporting whatever power you build.

50-State Legal

The intercooler kit is legal for sale and use on emissions-controlled vehicles in all 50 states when used per COBB's application guide, under CARB Executive Order numbers D-660-276 and D-660-329, and 2026 model-year cars are now included in that CARB approval for sale in California.
