Clutch Masters FX100 Rigid Hub Clutch Kit - 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5T & Si
This is a rigid hub clutch, and that word puts people off before they understand what it means here. On this application it's the right design, and the reason comes down to what's behind it. This kit is built to work with your factory dual-mass flywheel, and that flywheel is already doing the damping job that hub springs do on other cars. So you get the simplicity and durability of a solid hub without the harshness a rigid disc gives you on a lightweight single-mass setup.
What Rigid Hub Actually Means
Worth understanding before you decide, because there's a lot of bad information about this.
A sprung hub clutch has springs built into the center of the disc that absorb driveline shock when you engage. A rigid hub, also called solid or unsprung, doesn't. The splined hub is part of the carrier plate, one solid piece. Fewer parts, nothing to break, and no springs to fatigue over time.
Here's the part most people get wrong. The hub springs have much less effect on how the clutch engages than people assume. What actually determines whether engagement feels smooth or abrupt is the marcel spring wafer, the wavy spring between the friction surfaces that lets the disc compress progressively as the pressure plate clamps down. That's what widens your engagement window and gives you something to modulate.
This disc has a marcel spring wafer. That's why it can be a rigid hub and still behave itself in traffic.
Why Rigid Works On This Car
Two things make this combination work where a rigid hub would be miserable on a different setup.
Your dual-mass flywheel. The DMF has damping built into the flywheel itself, absorbing driveline shock before it reaches the transmission. That's the job hub springs do on a car running a lightweight single-mass flywheel. With a DMF, the hub springs are largely redundant, which is why plenty of factory setups pair a dual-mass flywheel with a solid hub disc from the beginning.
The marcel wafer. Combined with a full-face organic disc rather than pucks, engagement stays progressive instead of on-off. Puck-style rigid discs are the ones with the brutal reputation, and this isn't one.
Where rigid is genuinely the wrong call is a car with a lightweight flywheel and a puck disc, where nothing is damping anything and every gear change slams through the drivetrain. That's not this kit.
Who This Clutch Is Built For
The FX100 is a heavy-duty street clutch, and Clutch Masters is specific about its intended use. It's for the 1.5T owner who's added bolt-ons, an intake, an exhaust, up to 50hp of nitrous, or similar non-forced-induction additions, and needs more holding capacity than stock without turning the car into a chore to drive.
You get 70% more holding capacity than factory, with only slightly increased pedal pressure. Engagement and disengagement feel normal. This isn't a race clutch you tolerate, it's a stronger version of what you already have.
Built For Longevity
The FX100 pairs the Power Plus I heavy-duty pressure plate with a steel-backed organic friction disc. Organic material gives you the smooth engagement that makes a clutch livable, and the steel backing plus the heavier pressure plate is what adds the clamping force and the extended wear life. Clutch Masters designs these to outlast a factory clutch under normal use, though as with any clutch, that depends on your installation, your driving, and your break-in.
What's In The Kit
- Power Plus I heavy-duty pressure plate
- Steel-backed organic friction disc with marcel spring wafer
- OEM-or-better release bearing
- Pilot bearing (where applicable)
- Alignment tool
- Instruction card and decals
Break It In Properly
One piece of advice that matters on any new clutch. Take it easy for the first few hundred miles and let the friction surfaces bed in properly. Rushing break-in is one of the quickest ways to shorten the life of a clutch you just paid for and spent a day installing. Be gentle early and you'll get the longevity this kit is designed for.
Fitment
- 2016-2021 Honda Civic EX-T, Sport, and Si (1.5T, manual)
Works with the factory OEM dual-mass flywheel.
Who Should Run The FX100
This is for the 10th gen 1.5T owner who's added bolt-ons and wants a clutch that holds without punishing them for it. If your car is still a daily and you want more capacity with a familiar pedal, this is the right stage. If you've gone to a big turbo or serious power, you want a more aggressive clutch than this one. Bolt it on, break it in properly, and stop worrying about slip.
