Clutch finally giving up in your Civic? On a car this age, that's just what happens, and you already know the signs. You wind it out, the tach climbs faster than the speedo, and it smells hot after you lean on it. Time for a new clutch, and if you've thrown any bolt-ons at that D-series, this is a good excuse to put in something better than another stock replacement. The Clutch Masters FX100 holds about 70% more than the factory clutch did, and it still drives like a Civic should.

The Sweet Spot For A Bolt-On D-Series

Let's be honest about where this clutch lives, because it matters. The FX100 is the streetable one, and it's aimed squarely at the D-series Civic that gets driven every day with some basic stuff done to it, an intake, an exhaust, maybe a header, maybe a little nitrous up to about a 50-shot. That's the car this is perfect for. You get enough extra clamp that it stops slipping under your power, plus longer life than the stock clutch, without the harsh, grabby engagement a race clutch would punish you with in traffic every single day. Now if you're boosting that D16 or chasing serious power, you've moved past the FX100 and you want a stronger FX level. But for a clean bolt-on street Civic? This is exactly right.

Extra Clamp That Doesn't Wreck Your Left Leg

Here's what makes it easy to live with. The 70% jump in holding capacity comes from the Power Plus I heavy-duty pressure plate, but Clutch Masters kept the pedal effort only a touch above stock, so you're not doing leg day every time you hit traffic on your commute. And the disc is steel-backed organic with a Marcel spring wafer between the friction faces, which is the thing that smooths out engagement. Instead of the clutch banging in like an on-off switch, it takes up gradually and predictably, so it's easy to launch and easy to drive smoothly. That combination is why this kit works so well on a car you actually drive.

Built To Outlast The Stock Clutch

The steel backing behind the organic friction material is what gives the disc its strength and lets it shed heat, which is exactly what kills clutches. That means it lasts longer than the factory piece while holding more power. Worth knowing, though, and Clutch Masters says this too: clutch life isn't guaranteed, because a lot of it comes down to you. How it's installed, how you drive it, how much power you throw at it, whether you do the break-in properly, and whether you're running a lightweight flywheel all play into how long it lives. Do the install right, follow the break-in, and it'll take care of you.

While you've got the transmission out, take a look at your flywheel. If it's glazed, scored, or heat-checked from the old clutch slipping, get it resurfaced or replaced. A fresh clutch on a beat-up flywheel won't bed in right, and you'll be fighting it from day one.
