Clutch Masters Aluminum Flywheel for 16-21 Civic 1.5T

The factory flywheel on your 16-21 Civic 1.5T is a dual-mass unit that weighs about 31 pounds, and all that rotating weight is exactly why the car feels a little lazy to rev and hangs onto revs between shifts. This Clutch Masters aluminum flywheel is a single-mass replacement that weighs around 17 pounds, so you are cutting the rotating mass at the crank close to in half. The engine spins up quicker, the throttle feels sharper, and a lot of the annoying rev hang that these turbo Hondas are known for goes away. If you have tried to tune out rev hang and felt like it only got you partway there, this is the piece that actually finishes the job.

Clutch Masters machines these in house in the USA from 6061-T6 billet aluminum, zero-balances them so they spin dead true, and Type III hard anodizes the aluminum for durability. They are SFI 1.2 certified for motorsport use, and they use a replaceable friction insert, so when the wear surface is done you swap the insert instead of resurfacing the whole flywheel. It bolts up to your factory clutch or any of the Clutch Masters FX-series clutch kits, so you can reuse your OEM clutch or upgrade at the same time.

The honest tradeoff: this adds noise and vibration

Dropping the heavy dual-mass flywheel for a light single-mass aluminum one brings more gear noise and more vibration, especially a rattle at idle and light throttle. That is not a defect, it is physics: the dual-mass flywheel exists specifically to damp that noise, and a lighter flywheel produces more of it. Clutch Masters is blunt that aluminum flywheels make more gear noise than steel and that they generally recommend aluminum for race-focused builds chasing the least possible weight. If a whisper-quiet daily is your priority, this is worth thinking hard about. If you want the sharpest response and you are fine trading some NVH for it, this is exactly the part.

Fitment

This fits the 16-21 Civic with the 1.5L turbo engine and a manual transmission, across the EX-T, Si, and Sport trims. It does not fit the 2.0L naturally aspirated cars or any automatic. If you are not sure which engine you have, check before ordering.

What to know before you buy

First, the NVH tradeoff above is real, so go in with clear expectations. The rattle and gear noise are most noticeable at idle and low rpm, and most people who want the performance stop noticing it within a week or two of driving. But if you or a passenger is sensitive to that kind of thing, it is the one honest reason to hesitate on this part.

Second, this is a clutch job, so time it right. The flywheel is only accessible with the transmission out, which is the same labor as a clutch replacement. If your clutch is worn or you are planning to upgrade it anyway, do the flywheel at the same time so you are only paying for that labor once. Pairing it with a fresh Clutch Masters FX-series clutch is the natural combination, and it is far cheaper to do both together than to go back in later just for the flywheel.

Third, the payoff is biggest on a tuned car. The lighter flywheel helps everywhere, but it shines on a car that already has a tune and the rev hang dialed down, where the quicker-revving engine and reduced drivetrain lag really come through. On a turbo motor it also helps the engine come back on boost faster between shifts. If you are building the 1.5T for response and drivability, this is one of the mods you feel every single drive.
