BC Racing BR Series Coilovers - 2005-2012 Acura RL (KB1/KB2)

The RL is the Acura nobody talks about. It got buried between the TSX everyone bought and the NSX everyone dreamed about, and it's spent twenty years quietly depreciating while people forgot it existed. Except Spoon Sports didn't forget. Neither did Mugen. Spoon built one into a race car and hung their livery on it. Mugen went and dropped a V8 in one. Two of the most respected names in Honda tuning looked at this forgotten luxury sedan and saw something worth their time. They were onto something, and it starts underneath the car.

Let's Be Real About What This Is

You're not building a Spoon race car. We both know that, and pretending otherwise would be insulting. Those cars were one-off statements built by people with resources and reasons that have nothing to do with your driveway.

But here's why it matters anyway. Those builds exist because the RL has real bones, and Spoon and Mugen saw it before anybody else did. You're not chasing their car. You're chasing the same realization, that there's a genuinely good chassis buried under twenty years of luxury-sedan softness, and that it responds when you finally give it something to work with. That's a lot closer than you'd think, and suspension is where it starts.

Your SH-AWD Deserves A Chassis That Can Use It

This is the part that actually stings. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is one of the cleverest things Honda ever engineered, it doesn't just shuffle power front to rear, it overdrives the outside rear wheel through a corner and physically helps rotate the car. It's genuinely brilliant.

And right now it's fighting your suspension. When you turn in and the body rolls over onto the outside tire, when your twenty-year-old dampers let the car float and pitch and take a beat to settle, SH-AWD is trying to do precise, clever things to a chassis that isn't holding still long enough to receive them. All that technology is being wasted by worn dampers and a spring tune designed to keep executives comfortable. Get the body flat and controlled and the system finally has a platform to work with. You paid for SH-AWD. This is how you actually get it.

12 Front, 8 Rear, The Stiffest In The Lineup

Check the rates: 12 kg/mm front, 8 kg/mm rear. That front number is the stiffest spring BC puts under any Honda or Acura, stiffer than what goes under an S2000. And the 8 kg rear is stiffer than the front spring on most of the Civics people are out there racing.

There's no mystery to it. Your RL is a big, heavy car, right around two tons once you count the AWD hardware, and it carries most of that over the nose. Heavy cars need real spring rate, or the springs just collapse under the weight and you're back to wallowing. The front-to-rear split follows the weight the same way. This isn't BC being aggressive, it's BC actually weighing the car instead of shelving one spec across a brand. Numbers that would be brutal under a Civic are correct here.

RS Type Top Hats, Because It's Still A Luxury Car

This set uses RS type top hats, which mount with rubber. That's the right call for an RL. The rubber isolates road noise and vibration instead of piping it into a cabin that was specifically engineered to be quiet, so you sharpen the car up without undoing the thing that made it an RL in the first place. You want it to handle. You don't want it to feel cheap.

Thirty Clicks, One Knob

You get 30 clicks of compression and rebound, adjusted together, roughly ten seconds a corner. Soft enough to keep the highway manners that make this car a great place to spend two hours. Firm enough on a Saturday to find out what Spoon saw in it. Most suspension makes you pick one personality. This lets the car keep both, which honestly suits an RL better than it suits anything else here.

Low Without Wrecking It

Ride height adjusts independently of spring compression, so you drop the car by moving the lower mount rather than crushing the spring onto itself. The suspension keeps its travel and the damper keeps working. On a car this heavy that matters enormously, mass is unforgiving, and a two-ton sedan slammed on collapsed springs rides worse than almost anything on the road. Do it correctly and you get the stance and keep the composure.

Built To Be Kept

Mono-tube shocks with a linear piston and damping curve, so the damping stays predictable through the whole stroke instead of getting strange at the extremes. Two-year warranty against manufacturer defect. And they're fully rebuildable, so when they eventually wear you refresh them instead of replacing them, which is exactly what you want on a car that's cheap to buy and that you intend to keep interesting. Custom spring rates, Swift springs, and custom valving matched to your rates are all available.
