BC Racing BR Series Coilovers - 1986-1989 Acura Integra (First Gen, DA1-DA3)
The first-generation Integra is a proper classic now. These 80s Hondas are getting rare, and a clean one turns heads at any show precisely because you just don't see them anymore. So if you've got a DA, you're not just modifying a car, you're keeping a piece of Honda history alive. That comes with a catch most people don't expect. The front suspension on these runs torsion bars, not a normal coil spring setup, so lowering one properly takes a little more thought than bolting coilovers onto a modern Civic. BC Racing gets that, which is why this kit comes in two flavors.
Two Versions, So Read This First
This is the most important thing on the page, so slow down here. Because the DA uses front torsion bars, you get to choose how you want to handle the front of the car.
The first version is built to run without the torsion bars. You remove the factory torsion bar setup, and the coilovers take over the springing completely. In this configuration the springs come rated at 4kgf/mm up front and 3kgf/mm in the rear. This is the cleaner, more modern route. The coilover controls everything, you get the full range of height and adjustment, and you ditch the old torsion bar hardware.
The second version is built to keep your torsion bars in place. Here the factory bars still do the front springing, and the coilover works alongside them, so only the rear spring rate is specified at 3kgf/mm. This is the more conservative route. It keeps more of the car's original engineering intact and means less to tear apart during the install.
Neither one is better across the board, they're just different paths. If you want a simpler, more OEM-style setup, keep the torsion bars. If you want full coilover control and the most tuning range, go with the torsion-bar-delete version. Just make sure you order the one that matches how you plan to build the car, because they are not interchangeable.
What You Get Either Way
Whichever version you choose, the core benefits are the same. You get 30 levels of damping adjustment, so you can soften it up for cruising your classic on a nice day or firm it up when you want it to feel tight. Ride height adjusts at the base of the coilover, so you dial in exactly how the car sits and level all four corners instead of living with whatever drop you happen to land on. For a car this old, getting the stance right is a huge part of the appeal, and this gives you real control over it.
About The Top Mounts
This kit uses RS type mounts, meaning a rubber top mount up front and a rubber or reuse-OEM mount in the rear. On a classic street car, that's the right choice. Rubber keeps the road noise and harshness down so the car stays pleasant to drive, which matters when you're actually enjoying the thing rather than chasing lap times. The trade-off is there's no camber plate built in, so front camber stays set by your geometry. If you drop it low and want to correct camber later, plan on adding alignment parts down the road.
Do The Job Right
These cars are old, so go in with your eyes open. Before you even think about coilovers, look hard at the rest of the suspension. Forty-year-old bushings, ball joints, and hardware are often crusty, seized, or worn out, and there's no sense putting fresh coilovers on tired everything else. Budget for a refresh while you're in there. Then take your time on the install, set the height even side to side, and get a proper alignment when you're done. Do it right and you'll have a classic that sits gorgeous and drives like it's got decades less on the clock.
BC Racing has been building coilovers since the early 2000s, and the BR Series is the kit that made their name. It's affordable, it's proven on everything from daily drivers to builds, and offering a torsion-bar-specific option like this shows they actually pay attention to the quirks of the cars they support.
Who This Is For
This one's for the DA faithful, the folks preserving and building one of the coolest early Acuras there is.
