How Canards Actually Work
Two mechanisms, and the second one is the part most people don't understand.
Direct downforce. A canard is a small wing angled to push the front of the car down. In fast air it generates a downward force on the nose, adding grip to the front tires exactly when hard cornering is trying to push the front wide. That's the obvious job.
Vortex generation. This is the clever part. The edges of a canard spin the air into tight vortices that trail down the side of the car. Those vortices keep airflow attached to the bodywork instead of letting it separate and go turbulent, which reduces drag and helps everything downstream, side skirts, rear diffuser, work better. A canard improves the aero of parts nowhere near it.
Together that means sharper turn-in, a more stable front end at speed, and a car that carries more front grip through a fast corner. On an FK8 being tracked, that's real lap time.

Canards aren't a standalone solution, they're part of a system.
