The cabin filter behind the glovebox is the one filter most owners never change, and on a 10th gen Civic it's why the vents smell like a wet dog every spring. aFe's 35-10006C is an activated carbon replacement for the 2016-2021 Civic including the Type R: it catches the dust, pollen, and soot a paper filter catches and the carbon layer pulls exhaust and outside odors out of the air before it reaches the vents.

What It Is and Why It Works

A cabin filter sits in the HVAC intake and filters everything the blower pulls in, recirculate or fresh. The aFe filter uses a pleated media for particulates with a layer of activated carbon granules that adsorb the gases a paper filter passes straight through: exhaust from the car in front, brake dust, the smell of a paper mill on the interstate. It's cut to the factory cabin filter dimensions and drops into the housing the same way, no trimming. aFe cross-references it to Honda 80292-TBA-A11 and 80291-T5R-A01 among others, which covers the 2016 and up Civic family. It's a replacement item, not washable; change it at the factory interval or when the airflow drops.

What to Know Before You Buy

Change it once a year or every 15,000 miles, and every time the car comes back from a dusty track weekend; a loaded cabin filter is why the A/C feels weak in July before it's ever a refrigerant problem. The glovebox drops by squeezing the sides in and lifting past the stops, the filter door is behind it, and the arrow on the filter points down. This is a carbon filter, so it does something a paper one can't, but it doesn't fix a musty evaporator; if the smell is there with a fresh filter, the evaporator needs cleaning. Buy two; you'll use the second one.
