Why Genuine Matters More On This Car
On most cars an air filter is an air filter. On an NSX there are a couple of reasons to be particular.
The first is that these engines are precise. The C30A and C32B were built to a standard Honda hasn't repeated, and the intake system was engineered around a specific filter with specific flow characteristics. A dry pleated element does exactly what Acura intended, filters properly and flows as designed, without the oiling and MAF-contamination questions that come with aftermarket alternatives.
The second is simpler. If you're keeping records on an NSX, and most owners are, genuine parts belong in that history. It's the kind of detail that matters when the car changes hands, and it's the reason a lot of owners won't put anything else in the airbox.
When To Change It
Air filters are inspection items rather than strict interval items, so check yours rather than guessing. Pull it and hold it up to a light. If it's visibly loaded with dust and debris, or light isn't passing through the pleats, it's done its job and it's time.
Two things accelerate it. Dusty conditions obviously, but also time. Many NSXs cover very few miles per year, and a filter can be perfectly clean by mileage and still be a decade old, sitting in an airbox collecting whatever finds its way in. If you can't remember when yours was last replaced, it's probably older than you think.
A restricted filter costs you throttle response and makes the engine work harder for its air, which on an engine this responsive is exactly what you don't want.
