Action Clutch Stage 5 Clutch Kit with Lightweight Flywheel - 2004-2008 Acura TSX
Building a high-horsepower TSX with a turbo or all-motor setup and the Stage 3 or Stage 4 isn't strong enough? The Action Clutch Stage 5 kit is a dual clamp load clutch with a sprung 6-puck ceramic disc and a lightweight flywheel. It's got way more clamping force than the Stage 3 or Stage 4 because it uses a dual clamp load pressure plate instead of a single diaphragm. The sprung disc protects your transmission from shock loads while the dual clamp design grabs hard enough to hold 562 ft-lbs of torque at the crank. The lightweight flywheel makes your engine rev faster. This is for serious builds - turbo TSX making 400+ whp, supercharged setups, or high-compression all-motor builds revving to 9000+ RPM. If you're making this much power and you need a clutch that won't slip, this is it. The trade-off is the pedal's heavy as hell and the engagement is aggressive. It's barely streetable.
Here's What Dual Clamp Load Means
Most clutches use a single diaphragm pressure plate. The Stage 5 uses a dual clamp load pressure plate. That means there are two springs or diaphragms inside the pressure plate instead of one. The dual clamp design creates way more clamping force than a single diaphragm. That's how the Stage 5 holds 562 ft-lbs at the crank when the Stage 3 only holds around 300 ft-lbs. The downside is the pedal effort goes through the roof. Your left leg's going to be screaming in traffic. This is not a clutch for daily driving unless you hate yourself.
Sprung 6-Puck Disc Protects Your Transmission
The Stage 5 uses a sprung 6-puck ceramic disc. The springs in the disc hub absorb shock when you engage the clutch, which protects your transmission gears and synchros. Without the springs, all that shock from the dual clamp load pressure plate would go straight into your transmission and crack gears. The 6-puck design gives you aggressive engagement and strong holding power while the springs keep your transmission from exploding. If you're making serious power and launching hard, you need the springs or you'll be rebuilding your transmission constantly.
Lightweight Flywheel Included
The Stage 5 kit includes a lightweight flywheel. The flywheel weighs way less than your stock cast iron flywheel, so your engine revs faster when you hit the throttle and it drops RPM faster when you let off. That makes the engine feel way more responsive. The downside is the engine's harder to launch smoothly because there's less stored energy to help you get moving. You need more throttle and more clutch slip to get off the line without stalling. The lightweight flywheel also creates more noise and vibration at idle. If you're building a high-revving all-motor K24 or a big turbo setup, the lightweight flywheel's worth it for the throttle response. If you want easy launches and quiet operation, this isn't the kit for you.
562 Ft-Lbs Torque Capacity at the Crank
Action Clutch claims this clutch holds 562 ft-lbs of torque at the crank. That's not wheel torque - it's crank torque. A K24 making 400 whp with a turbo is making around 500-550 ft-lbs of torque at the crank depending on the power curve. The Stage 5 is strong enough for serious turbo builds, supercharged setups, or high-compression all-motor builds making big power. If you're making less than 350 whp, you don't need this clutch. Get the Stage 3 instead. The Stage 5 is overkill for mild builds and it's annoying to drive on the street.
It's Going to Be Harsh and Heavy
The Stage 5 has the heaviest pedal of any Action Clutch kit. Your left leg's going to get a workout. The engagement is also way more aggressive than the Stage 3. The clutch grabs hard and fast with minimal cushioning. It chatters when you're taking off from a stop, especially when it's new. The chatter gets better after break-in, but it doesn't go away completely. If you're trying to daily drive a car with this clutch, traffic's going to suck. This is a clutch for race cars or dedicated performance builds that see occasional street use.
Break It In or You'll Glaze the Disc
You need to break this clutch in properly. Do 500 miles of normal street driving with RPMs under 4500 and no hard launches. No boost if you're running forced induction. If you don't break it in properly, the ceramic material will glaze and the clutch won't grab like it's supposed to. A glazed clutch slips and it won't hold the torque it's rated for. Follow the break-in procedure or you'll waste your money and void your warranty.

Note: The Stage 5 is for serious high-horsepower builds. If you're making less than 350 whp, you don't need this clutch. Get the Stage 3 instead. The Stage 5 is overkill for mild builds and the heavy pedal and aggressive engagement make it annoying on the street. This clutch is designed for turbo TSX making 400+ whp, supercharged setups, or high-compression all-motor builds revving to 9000+ RPM. Break the clutch in properly - 500 miles under 4500 RPM with no hard launches and no boost. If you skip the break-in, you'll glaze the ceramic material and the clutch won't hold torque properly. You'll also void your warranty. The 562 ft-lbs torque rating is at the crank, not at the wheels. The pedal effort is the heaviest of any Action Clutch kit. Your left leg will get tired in traffic. The lightweight flywheel creates more noise and vibration at idle than a stock flywheel. That's normal. Resurface or replace your flywheel when you install this clutch - don't reuse an old flywheel with this aggressive disc.
