Hybrid Racing Heavy Duty S2000 Detent Springs (00-09)
The S2000's shifter is one of the best Honda ever built, but twenty-plus years of heat cycles and rev-matched downshifts take the snap out of it. If it started feeling vague between gates, or you occasionally grab at third, worn detent springs are the usual suspect. Our Hybrid Racing Transmission Detent Springs replace all seven springs in the 00-09 Honda S2000 gearbox with stiffer, higher-preload versions that bring the precision back.
What S2000 Detent Springs Do and Why Ours Are Better
Each spring loads a steel ball against the transmission's shift components, holding the box in gear and giving every throw its defined notch. The 6-speed behind the F20C and F22C1 uses seven of them, and unlike Honda's FWD transmissions, every direction of the gate is sprung independently: front/back, left/right, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and reverse each get their own spring. That layout is why a tired S2000 shifter feels inconsistent, some gears stay crisp while others go soft.
We wind ours more than 80% stiffer than stock with added preload, then zinc chromate plate them so they hold up inside the case. The difference is immediate: the lever wants to finish each shift, engagement feels deliberate instead of rubbery, and the box stops letting you hover in neutral between 3rd and 5th. Owners regularly compare the result to a gated shifter. Because every position is independent, you can run the full set or swap only the positions you want firmer and keep stock springs elsewhere to tune the feel.

What to Know Before You Buy
You can do this install with the transmission in the car. Access is really tight, the bolts sit where a standard ratchet fights you, so a T-handle or stubby wrench saves your knuckles, and with the car on a lift the swap takes well under an hour. Put a dab of Hondabond or grey Permatex on the detent bolt threads when they go back in, and torque them to 16 lbf-ft. You're already under the car, so this is the right time to do transmission and differential fluid too.
Be honest with yourself about the feel you want. Stiffer detents mean a slightly heavier, more deliberate lever. Most owners love it, but if you prize the featherlight stock action, you can start with select positions and add the rest later. Know what this kit won't do: it restores shift feel and gate definition, it does not repair grinding or gear pop-out caused by worn synchros or sleeves. If 4th spits out under load, the fix is inside the gearbox, not the springs.
Stock springs lose free length and tension with age, and past 100k miles they rarely match each other position to position. For under an hour of work, this is one of the highest-return feel upgrades you can make to an S2000 driveline.
