PRODUCT DETAILS

Honda Genuine ATF DW-1 Automatic Transmission Fluid - Part #08200-9008

If you're doing a drain-and-fill on a K20A3 RSX, a 5-speed auto TSX, a B-series EG or EK with the 4-speed, or any Honda or Acura automatic that came with ATF-Z1 or DW-1 from the factory, this is the fluid. Honda Genuine ATF DW-1, part number 08200-9008, one US quart, sold individually so you can buy exactly the count your transmission drains.

What Honda ATF DW-1 Is and Why You Should Run It

Honda's conventional automatics (the 4-speed and 5-speed units in everything from the EG Civic to the CU2 TSX and 8th-gen Accord) use their own clutch-pack friction characteristics, and Honda writes the fluid spec around them. DW-1 replaced ATF-Z1 around 2011 as the factory fill and is backward compatible with every transmission that originally called for Z1. It's a lower-viscosity fluid than Z1, which is where the fuel economy claim comes from, and you can mix it with leftover Z1 without hurting anything.

The reason we stock the genuine bottle instead of pointing you at a multi-vehicle ATF is simple: torque converter shudder and flare on Honda automatics is almost always a fluid problem, and the fix Honda publishes is three drain-and-fills with DW-1. Universal fluids that list "Honda DW-1" on the label are approximations of the friction package. Some people run them happily. On a transmission you actually care about, the genuine fluid is cheap insurance for the same job.

Fitment

Make Application
Honda All automatic transmissions originally specified for ATF-Z1 or ATF DW-1 (4-speed, 5-speed, and DW-1 spec 6-speed)
Acura All automatic transmissions originally specified for ATF-Z1 or ATF DW-1 (RSX, TSX, TL, RL, MDX and others through the DW-1 era)

Fitment is by transmission, not by chassis or year. The dipstick, the fill cap, or the owner's manual will say DW-1, Z1, HCF-2, Type 2.0, Type 3.1, or HEVF. If it says anything other than DW-1 or Z1, this is the wrong bottle. Roughly, anything Honda or Acura with a conventional automatic from the late 1990s up through the mid-2010s is DW-1. Late-model 9-speed, 10-speed, CVT, and hybrid cars are not.

What to Know Before You Buy

Buy by the drain, not by the capacity. A Honda automatic holds somewhere around 7 to 9 quarts total, but a drain plug only lets out about a third of it, usually 3 to 3.5 quarts on the 4 and 5-speeds. So a single drain-and-fill takes 3 or 4 quarts. If you're chasing shudder or the fluid is dark and burnt, plan on three drain-and-fill cycles a few hundred miles apart, which means 9 to 12 quarts. Order the full count up front. Never put a Honda automatic on a flush machine; it can push debris into the solenoids and Honda specifically warns against it.

While you're under there, replace the 18mm drain plug crush washer (Honda 90471-PX4-000). Reusing it is how you get the slow drip on the garage floor a week later. Check the level hot, engine off, on level ground, a minute or two after shutdown, exactly as the owner's manual describes. Overfilling a Honda auto causes foaming and the same harsh shifts you were trying to fix.

Do not use this in a CVT. The R18 Civics, the 9th and 10th-gen CVT Accords, and the CVT CR-Vs take HCF-2, and DW-1 in a belt CVT is a transmission you'll be replacing. Same story for the 2016-and-up 9 and 10-speed Odyssey, Pilot, Accord, and RDX. If you're running a swapped auto (a K24 into an EG with the donor 5-speed automatic, for example), the transmission decides the fluid, not the chassis. Fluids are not returnable once the seal is broken, so confirm the spec before you open the box.
