Choosing the Right Clutch for Your K-Series

Whether you’re building a naturally aspirated street car, adding boost, or putting together a dedicated race car, choosing the right clutch is about more than simply picking the highest stage available.

In our latest video, we use the 2006–2011 Honda Civic Si and its K20Z3 as our example to break down the Action Clutch lineup. While the specific kits and torque capacities can vary by application, the same basic principles apply to K20 and K24-powered cars across the Honda K-Series platform.

Stage 1 – Street Performance

Action Clutch Stage 1 is designed for stock and mildly modified cars. It uses a full-face, sprung organic disc with a Copper Kevlar friction material and heavy-duty pressure plate.

The result is smooth engagement and an OEM-like pedal feel with increased holding capacity. For a daily-driven Civic Si with basic bolt-ons or occasional track use, Stage 1 is a great place to start.

Stage 2 – More Performance Without Sacrificing the Street

Stage 2 steps up to Action Clutch’s Super Copper organic friction material while retaining a full-face sprung disc.

This gives the clutch additional grip and heat capacity while keeping engagement relatively manageable for street driving. For a modified K-Series street car that needs more capacity than Stage 1 but still spends plenty of time in traffic, Stage 2 offers a good balance.

Stage 3 – Sprung Ceramic

Stage 3 moves into a much more performance-focused MIBA ceramic puck-style disc.

The ceramic material offers significantly more aggressive engagement and is designed to handle the additional heat and abuse associated with drag racing, road racing, drifting, and higher-output builds. The sprung hub still provides some compliance, making Stage 3 the more street-friendly choice compared with Stage 4.

Stage 4 – Unsprung Ceramic

Stage 4 takes another step toward dedicated motorsports use by switching to a rigid ceramic disc.

Removing the sprung hub creates faster, more direct engagement, but also makes the clutch considerably less forgiving during normal street driving. This is a setup intended for cars where performance and response are more important than comfort.

7.25-Inch Twin Disc – When a Single Disc Isn’t Enough

For serious K-Series race builds, Action Clutch also offers its 7.25-inch Twin Disc Race Kit.

For the 2006–2011 Civic Si, the kit uses two 7.25-inch sintered metallic race discs along with a dedicated lightweight chromoly flywheel. The smaller diameter assembly helps reduce rotating mass, while the twin-disc design provides significantly more holding capacity and heat capacity than a conventional single-disc clutch.

Action Clutch rates the 2006–2011 Civic Si version at 800 lb-ft of crank torque, putting it in an entirely different category from the Stage 1–4 single-disc options.

This is a purpose-built racing clutch for high-power and competition K-Series applications—not simply the next "stage" for a street car.

Choosing the Right Clutch

The biggest takeaway from our video is simple: more clutch isn’t always better.

For most street-driven K-Series cars, Stage 1 or Stage 2 may provide all the holding capacity you need while maintaining good drivability. As power and track use increase, Stage 3 and Stage 4 offer progressively more aggressive options. Once you move into serious racing and high-power applications, a multi-disc setup like the 7.25-inch Twin Disc becomes the more appropriate solution.

Choosing the clutch that matches your power level and intended use will ultimately give you a car that performs better—and is much more enjoyable to drive.
