Honda K20A/K20Z/K24A2 Gear Selector Interlock - 24430-PNS-000
Rebuilding your RSX Type S or Civic Si transmission and you need the gear selector interlock? Honda part number 24430-PNS-000 is the OEM interlock mechanism that prevents you from engaging two gears at once. It's a small but critical part inside your transmission that locks out the other shift rails when you're selecting a gear. Without it, you could accidentally engage two gears simultaneously and lock up your entire drivetrain. That's transmission grenading, driveshaft snapping, differential exploding bad. When you're doing a transmission rebuild, you're replacing this interlock if it's worn or damaged. Don't skip it.
Here's What the Interlock Actually Does
Your transmission's got multiple shift rails inside (one for each gear pair). When you move your shifter to select a gear, you're moving one of those rails. The interlock's job is to lock the other rails in neutral while one rail's engaged. It uses pins and ball grooves to physically block the other rails from moving. When all the rails are in neutral, the grooves line up and you can select any gear. When you move one rail to engage a gear, the interlock pin locks the other rails in place. They can't move. This is called cross-locking. Without this interlock, you could move two rails at once and engage first gear and third gear at the same time. Your transmission would lock solid, your tires would skid, and you'd destroy gears, shafts, the diff, everything. The interlock prevents that disaster.
When You Need to Replace It
You're replacing the interlock during a full transmission rebuild. If you're in there changing synchros, bearings, or gears, check the interlock. The pins and grooves wear over time, especially in high-mileage transmissions or transmissions that've been abused. If the interlock's worn, it might not lock the rails completely and you could get partial engagement of two gears. That'll cause grinding, gear clash, or even lockup. If you're doing a rebuild, just replace it. It's cheap and it's one of those "replace it now or regret it later" parts. Don't reuse a worn interlock and find out it's bad when your trans locks up on the highway.
Requires Full Transmission Disassembly
You can't get to the interlock without tearing your transmission completely apart. Trans out of the car, case split, shift rails pulled. The interlock sits between the shift rails inside the case. Installation's straightforward once you're in there, but you're already doing a full rebuild if you're replacing this. Make sure the pins and grooves are clean and undamaged when you install it. Dirt or burrs in the grooves will cause the interlock to bind or not engage properly.

Note: This interlock's critical for safe transmission operation. Don't skip it during a rebuild. If you're doing a transmission rebuild and you're reusing worn parts to save money, don't reuse a worn interlock. It's not worth the risk. Test the interlock function before you button up the trans case. Move each shift rail individually and verify the other rails are locked in neutral. If a rail moves when it shouldn't, something's wrong with the interlock or it's not installed correctly. Fix it before you close everything up.
