Honda D Series Timing Belt Drive Pulley - 13621-PM3-013
Doing a timing belt job on your D series? You need to inspect your timing belt drive pulley. The Honda D series timing belt drive pulley (part number 13621-PM3-013) sits on your crankshaft at the base of your timing belt system. It sits behind your crank pulley and between the two timing belt guide plates. The timing belt wraps around this pulley and it's what drives your camshaft. When the pulley gets worn, the timing belt can slip or jump teeth. If your timing belt jumps timing, that's valves hitting pistons and a destroyed engine. Replace your timing belt drive pulley if it's worn or if you're doing a timing belt job on a high-mileage engine.
Here's What This Pulley Does
Your timing belt drive pulley bolts to your crankshaft and it drives your timing belt. The pulley's got teeth that mesh with the teeth on your timing belt. As your crankshaft spins, the pulley turns and it drives your timing belt. Your timing belt drives your camshaft, which opens and closes your valves. If the pulley's worn and the teeth are damaged, your timing belt can skip teeth on the pulley. When your timing belt skips teeth, your camshaft timing's off and your valves can hit your pistons. That's a bent valve or a destroyed piston. Don't run a worn timing belt pulley.
Sits Between the Timing Belt Guide Plates
The timing belt drive pulley sits between two timing belt guide plates on your crankshaft. The guide plates keep your timing belt tracking straight on the pulley. The pulley sits behind your crank pulley, so you need to remove your crank pulley to access the timing belt pulley. When you're doing a timing belt job, you're already removing your crank pulley, so inspect the timing belt drive pulley at the same time.
Replace It If the Teeth Are Worn
Whenever you're doing a timing belt job, inspect your timing belt drive pulley. If the teeth are worn, rounded, chipped, or damaged, replace it. Don't reuse a worn pulley. A worn pulley will chew up your new timing belt and your timing belt can skip teeth. The pulley's not expensive and you've already got everything apart for the timing belt job. Replace it while you're in there.

Inspect your timing belt drive pulley every time you do a timing belt job. If the teeth are worn or damaged, replace it. Don't reuse a worn pulley with a new timing belt. The worn pulley will damage your new timing belt and your timing belt can skip teeth. When you're doing a timing belt job, replace your timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner, and timing belt drive pulley if it's worn. Do everything at once so you're not pulling it all apart again in six months.
