Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel - F22/F23/H22/H23 Transmissions
The stock H22 flywheel weighs roughly 19 to 22 lbs of cast iron. That's a lot of rotational mass your engine has to spin up every time you get on the throttle, and spin down every time you lift. If you've ever felt like your Prelude's throttle response is lazy compared to the way VTEC sounds, the flywheel is a big part of why. Fidanza's 191221 aluminum flywheel drops that down to 8.45 lbs, and the difference in how the car responds is one of the most noticeable single-part upgrades you can do.
Why It Works
Fidanza machines the 191221 from billet 6061 T6 aluminum forgings on CNC equipment to tolerances of +/- .001". That's the same alloy grade used in aerospace applications, with an ultimate tensile strength of at least 42,000 psi. The friction surface is a separate 1045 steel plate, and the ring gear is 1050 steel that's heat treated and pressed on with grade 8 button screws. Everything is dynamically balanced and individually inspected before it ships.
The replaceable friction plate is a genuinely useful feature. When you eventually wear through a clutch or need to resurface the flywheel, you swap the steel plate instead of buying an entire new flywheel. Fidanza's replacement plate for this application is part number 229221. That makes the Fidanza effectively a lifetime flywheel if you maintain it.
Fidanza also uses a stepped dowel system on this application. Once you bolt the pressure plate on, the dowels lock into place and can't back out. It's compatible with any clutch disc material, including organic, kevlar, ceramic, metallic, and sintered iron, so you're not locked into a specific clutch brand or type.

This flywheel fits manual transmission cars only. It covers both SOHC F-series and DOHC H-series engines in these chassis because they share the same crankshaft bolt pattern and bellhousing.
What to Know Before You Buy
At 8.45 lbs, this is one of the lighter flywheel options for the H/F series. For context, the ACT Streetlite comes in at 12.6 lbs and the Competition Clutch steel flywheel is 12.8 lbs. If you mainly autocross or road race, the 8.45 lb weight is ideal because it gives you maximum throttle response and lets you control RPM precisely through corners. If you drag race, some builders prefer a 12+ lb flywheel because the extra inertia helps with consistent launches and keeps RPMs from falling off too quickly between gears.
You will notice the difference immediately. The engine revs up and drops down noticeably faster than stock. Rev-matching downshifts becomes easier because the engine responds instantly. The flip side is that pulling away from a stop takes a slightly more deliberate clutch foot. It's not difficult, just different. Most owners say it takes a day or two to adjust and then becomes second nature. You'll also hear more gear rattle at idle because there's less mass to dampen engine pulses. Some people describe it as the car sounding like it has mild cams. That's normal.
The Fidanza arrives with a green protective coating on the friction surface. Remove it before installation. Use acetone or lacquer thinner and wipe it clean. If you skip this step and don't do a proper clutch break-in, you'll get chatter and slipping until it eventually burns off (or doesn't). Follow the included break-in procedure.
This is a flywheel only. You'll reuse your existing clutch kit if it's in good shape, but since you're already pulling the transmission, most people take the opportunity to install a fresh clutch, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing at the same time. That saves you from doing the job twice.
