PRODUCT DETAILS

Exedy OEM Clutch Slave Cylinder for 2001-2005 Civic - Part #SC896

Car won't go into gear at a stop, pedal feels fine one day and mushy the next, wet spot on the transmission case under the slave: that's this part. Exedy's SC896 is the OE-style external slave cylinder for the 2001-2005 Civic with the D17 and a manual, and it's the cheap end of the fix.

What It Is and Why It Works

The slave bolts to the transmission and pushes the release fork when the master sends pressure down the line. It lives in heat and road grime, so the seals go before the master's do. Once it starts bypassing internally you get a pedal that never quite builds pressure, and once it leaks externally you get a system that won't hold a bleed no matter how many times you do it.

SC896 is a straight OE-style unit: same bore, same pushrod length, same bolt pattern. It doesn't change release travel and it's not a concentric conversion. Anodized aluminum body, EPDM seals, honed bore. Exedy GlobalParts is Honda's OE clutch supplier, which is why this is the part to buy instead of a parts-store reman.

What to Know Before You Buy

If the master is original, do it now too. Exedy MC553 is the match. Replacing one end of a tired hydraulic system and then chasing air for a week is the most common way this job goes wrong.

Bench-bleed isn't needed on the slave, but you do need to bleed the line properly with fresh DOT 3. Crack the bleeder with the pedal held down, close it before the pedal comes up, repeat until it's solid.

Check the release fork pivot and the fork boot while you're in there. A dry pivot ball makes a new slave feel like a bad one.
