PRODUCT DETAILS

Competition Clutch H-Series 184mm Twin Disc Ceramic Clutch

This is Competition Clutch's 184mm (7.25 inch) twin disc ceramic clutch kit for Honda H-series and F-series engines, part number 1848014-2, previously sold as 4-8014-C. It fits 1992-2001 Preludes running H22A1, H22A4, and H23A1 power, 1990-2002 four cylinder Accords with F22 and F23 engines, and the 1997-1999 Acura CL four cylinder. Competition Clutch rates the 184 series twin disc at up to 1,350 hp per manufacturer, and on real turbo H22 and F-series builds it is commonly run from roughly 500 to over 1,000 whp. For most big turbo Prelude and Accord builds, this clutch will not be the weak link in the drivetrain.

What It Is and Why It Works

Clutches hold torque, not horsepower, and that matters more here than on a B-series car. A turbo H22 at 500 whp makes substantially more torque than a turbo B18C at the same power because of its 2.2L displacement, so a single disc that survives on a B-series will slip sooner on an H. To hold that torque with one disc you need enormous clamp load and aggressive puck material, which means a punishing pedal and on-off engagement. The twin disc splits the job across two 184mm discs and a floater plate, four friction surfaces instead of two. The pressure plate does not have to clamp as hard, so pedal effort is lighter than a comparably rated single, engagement is more progressive, and every launch puts less shock through the synchros and axles.

The smaller discs matter too. Stock H-series discs are roughly 225mm; these are 184mm, so the rotating assembly is lighter and the engine revs faster between shifts. Two smaller discs still give more total friction area than one stock size disc, so you get quicker rev matching and more holding power at the same time.

The kit is built around a 4140 forged steel flywheel that is machined specifically for the 184mm stack, so you do not reuse the OEM flywheel. The two unsprung 6-puck ceramic discs ride on a self-centering floater plate using Competition Clutch's Power-V drive system, which lets the floater center itself as the stack wears so both discs wear evenly. Up top is a CNC machined 6061 T6 aluminum cover with a 6150 steel diaphragm. Per manufacturer, the throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and alignment tool are included, and the release is push type on a 24-spline, 1-1/32 inch input shaft. The flywheel is the only component that differs between this H/F-series kit and the B-series twin disc (1848026-2); the discs, floater, and cover are shared.

Four cylinder manual transmission cars only. V6 Accords and the 2001-2003 CL use J-series engines with a completely different transmission and clutch, so this kit does not fit them. It also does not fit the 1988-1991 third gen Prelude, which uses B20A and B21A engines. If you are running an H2B swap, an H-series engine on a B-series transmission, this kit does not fit either: the flywheel is machined for the H/F bellhousing, and Competition Clutch makes a dedicated H2B twin disc, part 4-80142-C, with the same discs and cover on a B-series specific flywheel. Prelude Type SH owners should also think about the ATTS front differential at big power; the clutch installs the same, but many high-horsepower builds bypass ATTS.

What to Know Before You Buy

This is a race-oriented clutch and it drives like one. Owners consistently describe pedal effort at roughly two to three times stock, which is noticeable but still lighter than the high-clamp single disc you would otherwise need at this power level. The engagement zone is narrow; you will probably stall it a few times the first day and have it dialed within a week. With the pedal down at idle the floater plate rattles, and the ceramic pucks chirp during engagement. Both are normal for every multi-plate ceramic clutch and neither goes away, so if you spend an hour a day in stop and go traffic, this is not the clutch for you. Break it in gently for about 500 street miles before boost or hard launches so the ceramic pads bed into both discs and the floater.

Our honest recommendation: below roughly 350 to 400 whp on an H or F series, a Stage 3 or Stage 4 single disc holds the power, drives better, and costs less, so this kit is overkill on a bolt-on or mild turbo car. From about 450 to 500 whp up, single discs are at their limit on H-series torque and the twin disc becomes the right tool. Above 1,000 whp, look at the 184mm triple disc (1848014-3) instead. While the transmission is out, replace the rear main seal if it shows any seepage, use new flywheel bolts torqued to spec, and bleed the hydraulics completely, because air in the line makes the narrow engagement point even harder to find. Remember the clutch is now stronger than the gearbox: factory H-series transmissions have known limits at these power levels, so budget for gears and synchros on a serious build.
