APR Performance Carbon Fiber Gurney Flap - 2017-2021 Civic Type R (FK8)
A gurney flap is one of those aero tricks that looks trivial and does real work: a small perpendicular tab at the trailing edge of a wing that meaningfully increases downforce. This gurney flap is shaped specifically for the factory FK8 Type R wing. It's contoured to that wing's trailing edge, so it fits the stock spoiler and not an aftermarket wing.
If you're running the factory wing, this bolts on the extra performance. If you've fitted an aftermarket wing, you'd need a gurney flap made for that wing instead.
How A Small Tab Adds Real Downforce
Worth explaining, because it's genuinely clever and not obvious.
A gurney flap is a small tab mounted perpendicular at the trailing edge of the wing, and despite its size it increases downforce noticeably. Here's why it works.
The tab creates a small recirculation region and a pair of counter-rotating vortices right behind the trailing edge. That structure does two useful things: it increases the pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the wing, which is literally what downforce is, and it helps keep the airflow attached to the upper surface of the wing rather than separating.
Keeping the flow attached is the bigger deal. It means the wing can run at a higher angle of attack before it stalls. A wing that stalls, where the airflow separates, suddenly stops making downforce, so pushing that stall point further out lets you run more aggressive wing angles and get more downforce out of the same wing. The gurney flap effectively raises the ceiling on what your wing can do.
Dry Carbon, Super Light
The construction is the good stuff.
It's made using the pre-preg dry carbon process, which produces an extremely lightweight, strong part. On a small aero tab that mounts at the trailing edge of the wing, low weight is exactly what you want, you're not adding meaningful mass out at the back of the car, just the aero benefit.
Dry carbon also looks the part, the genuine woven carbon finish that matches a serious build, on a piece that's right in view at the top of the wing.
Sticks On, No Drilling
Installation is about as easy as aero gets.
It attaches with the included double-sided tape, so there's no drilling into your wing and nothing permanent. Clean the trailing edge, position the flap, and press it on.
As with any adhesive install, surface prep matters: clean the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol first so you're bonding to a clean surface, and work somewhere warm so the tape grips properly. Done right, it stays put, and because it's tape rather than hardware, it's reversible if you ever want the wing back to stock.
