Honda OEM Timing Belt - J Series V6 Engines

Your J series V6 is at 90,000-110,000 miles and the timing belt's due. You're looking at the maintenance schedule and Honda's telling you it's time. Here's what happens if you ignore it. The timing belt's made of rubber with reinforced fibers. It's been flexing and stretching for 100,000 miles in a hot engine bay. The rubber's degrading. The fibers are wearing. Eventually the belt breaks. When it breaks on a J series V6, your valves hit your pistons. These are interference engines. That means when the timing belt snaps and the camshafts stop turning, the valves stay open and the pistons keep moving. They smash into the valves. You're looking at bent valves, damaged pistons, possibly worse. A timing belt costs you one afternoon and the price of the belt. A bent valve job costs you weeks and thousands of dollars. Don't skip the timing belt. This is genuine Honda OEM part 14400-RCA-A01. It's the correct belt for J30A, J32A, J35A, and J37A engines. Replace it at the recommended interval and you're never going to experience a timing belt failure.

Here's What Happens When a Timing Belt Breaks

J series V6 engines are interference engines. That means the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times. The timing belt keeps them synchronized so they never hit each other. The camshafts open and close the valves. The crankshaft moves the pistons up and down. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshafts and keeps everything timed correctly. When the timing belt's intact the valves are out of the way when the pistons come up. When the timing belt breaks the camshafts stop turning but the crankshaft doesn't. The pistons keep moving. The valves are stuck open. The pistons slam into the open valves. We've seen timing belt failures on J series engines. It's not pretty. Bent valves. Damaged valve guides. Scarred pistons. Sometimes you're looking at a complete cylinder head rebuild. Sometimes you're replacing pistons. Sometimes the damage is so bad you're better off swapping in a used engine. All of that because the timing belt broke. The belt costs a fraction of what the repair costs. Replace it on schedule.

Replace It at 90,000-110,000 Miles

Honda recommends replacing the timing belt on J series V6 engines at 90,000 to 110,000 miles depending on the model year and whether you're driving in severe conditions. Severe conditions means short trips, extreme temperatures, dusty environments, or towing. If you're driving in severe conditions Honda says 90,000 miles. If you're driving in normal conditions Honda says 110,000 miles. Most people are somewhere in between. Play it safe and do the timing belt at 90,000 miles. You're paying for the labor to pull the covers and access the belt. While you're in there replace the water pump too. The water pump's driven by the timing belt. If the water pump fails after you've done the timing belt you're doing the whole job again to replace the pump. We've covered this in the water pump description but it's worth repeating. Replace the timing belt and the water pump at the same time. You're in there once. You're done for another 100,000 miles.

Honda OEM Belt - The One That Actually Lasts

This is genuine Honda OEM part 14400-RCA-A01. It's the timing belt Honda installs at the factory. The rubber compound's correct. The fiber reinforcement's correct. The tooth profile matches the cam and crank pulleys. It's rated for 100,000 miles of service. Aftermarket timing belts exist. Some are fine. Some are junk. We've seen aftermarket belts that are too thin. We've seen belts with incorrect tooth profiles that cause noise. We've seen belts that crack after 50,000 miles. The timing belt is the most critical wear item on your J series V6. It's not the place to save money with a cheap belt. You're installing the timing belt once every 100,000 miles. Buy the Honda belt. It lasts. You're not going to be back in there early because the aftermarket belt failed. You're driving with confidence knowing the belt's going to make it to the next service interval.

Note: Timing belt for J series V6 engines (J30A, J32A, J35A, J37A). J series engines are interference engines (valves hit pistons if timing belt breaks - results in bent valves, damaged pistons, expensive repairs). Replace at 90,000-110,000 miles depending on driving conditions (severe conditions 90k, normal conditions 110k). Severe conditions include short trips, extreme temps, dusty environments, towing. Replace water pump at same time as timing belt (water pump driven by timing belt, same labor to access both). Genuine Honda OEM part 14400-RCA-A01. Correct rubber compound, fiber reinforcement, tooth profile. Rated for 100,000 miles. Not aftermarket. Don't skip timing belt service on interference engines.
