PRODUCT DETAILS

HKS Intercooler Kit - 2017-2021 Honda Civic Type R (FK8)

Run an FK8 hard and the factory intercooler heat-soaks. Intake temps climb past 90°C, the ECU pulls timing to protect the engine, and the power you had on the first pull isn't there on the fourth. This HKS intercooler uses a 100mm wide core, roughly double the volume of stock, which keeps charge air cool through back-to-back pulls and a full track session.

With Or Without Piping

Pick your configuration at checkout.

With piping is the complete kit. HKS piping runs smoother with larger radius bends than the factory pipes, which means less restriction and less boost pressure lost between the turbo and the throttle body. If you're starting from stock, this is the version that gets the whole charge path sorted at once.

Without piping is the core and end tanks alone. That's the right pick if you're already running aftermarket charge piping you're happy with, since there's no sense paying for pipes you'll leave in the box.

Confirm your existing piping will mate to the HKS end tanks before choosing the core-only option.

What Heat-Soak Actually Costs You

The factory intercooler is adequate for stock boost on the street. It stops being adequate on a track or at higher boost, and the failure is gradual rather than dramatic.

An intercooler that can't shed heat fast enough lets intake temperatures climb. Once they pass roughly 90°C, the ECU starts pulling timing to prevent knock, and pulled timing means lost power.

In practice that looks like a car making full power on the first pull and 20 to 30 horsepower less by the third or fourth. Same engine, same boost, saturated intercooler. It's also why lap times often get worse as a session goes on rather than better.

Double The Core Volume

The numbers make the difference clear.

HKS core: 695 x 178 x 100mm
Factory core: 680 x 143 x 64mm

The HKS core is wider, taller, and considerably deeper, working out to roughly double the volume. More volume means more surface area for heat transfer, and more surface area means charge air arriving at the engine cooler.

HKS dyno data shows 11 horsepower and 6 lb-ft over stock at factory boost, but the peak figure understates it. The real benefit is that the fourth pull matches the first.

Aluminum End Tanks, Not Plastic

The factory end tanks are plastic. These are aluminum.

Plastic tanks crack and warp from repeated heat cycling, which is a known failure point on boosted cars generally. Aluminum doesn't, so this is a part you fit once rather than one you'll be revisiting after a few seasons of track use.

Plan For Some Trimming

Be realistic about the install before ordering.

The HKS core is bigger than stock, which means it contacts the fan shroud. Fitting it requires minor trimming of a rubber piece and slight modification to the fan shroud for clearance.

Neither is difficult, but this isn't a pure bolt-on. Budget roughly 30 minutes beyond the install itself, and know that the trimming is permanent.

Get It Retuned If You're Over Stock Boost

If your car is making more than factory boost, book dyno time after the install.

A freer-flowing intercooler changes boost response and airflow characteristics slightly, and a tune written around the factory unit no longer matches what the engine is doing. At stock boost you're fine. Past that, a retune is what turns the hardware into usable power safely.

Who Should Run This

This is for the FK8 owner who takes the car to track days and has watched power fade through a session, or who's added boost and needs the charge cooling to keep up. Double the core volume, aluminum end tanks that won't crack, and consistent intake temps when you're leaning on the car. Pick your configuration, budget the trimming time, and get power that holds.

Fits: 2017-2021 Honda Civic Type R (FK8), K20C1. Options: with or without intercooler piping. Core: 695 x 178 x 100mm, roughly double factory volume. End tanks: aluminum. Gains: 11 hp and 6 lb-ft at factory boost per HKS dyno data. Includes: mounting hardware and couplers. Install: requires minor trimming of a rubber piece and the fan shroud.
