Rywire B16A OBD0 VTEC ECU Subharness - 1988-1991 Honda CRX / Civic
Doing a B16A swap into your OBD0 CRX or Civic? Then you need to wire up the VTEC side of things, or your shiny new B16A is just an expensive non-VTEC motor. Your original 88-91 OBD0 wiring came set up for a D-series, so it doesn't have the wires for the VTEC bits that make a B16A worth swapping in the first place. That's what this Rywire subharness handles. It adds the wiring your ECU needs to actually run VTEC, so the engine hits that second cam and pulls hard up top the way it's supposed to. It's a clean, plug-in piece of the swap instead of a night spent splicing wires by hand.
What This Subharness Actually Wires Up
Here's exactly what it adds to your harness, and why each one matters. It wires in your VTEC solenoid, which is the part that actually engages VTEC, no solenoid wiring, no VTEC, simple as that. It connects your VTEC oil pressure switch, so the system knows it's got the oil pressure to safely flip over to the high cam. It hooks up your knock sensor, which is cheap insurance that helps protect your motor from detonation. And it ties in your second oxygen sensor so your fueling stays happy. Add it all up and you've got the VTEC-specific wiring an OBD0 chassis didn't come with, done with OEM-quality materials and standard connections so it's reliable instead of a sketchy hack job.
Read This Before You Buy: Trim Matters
This is the part you can't skip, because the trim of your car decides whether this works. This subharness only fits the higher trims that came with the sensor wiring provisions it taps into, and it will not work on the base DX or STD models. So make sure your car is one of these:
- 1988-1991 Honda CRX HF
- 1988-1991 Honda CRX Si
- 1989-1991 Honda Civic Si
- 1990-1991 Honda Civic EX
If you've got a CRX DX or STD, or a Civic DX or STD, this is not the right part for your car, the base models don't have the wiring this subharness is built to plug into. Confirm your trim before you order so you get the correct piece for your swap.
Why It Makes The Swap Easier
The whole point here is that you're not reinventing your wiring to get VTEC working. Instead of chasing down each VTEC wire, figuring out where it goes, and splicing it in and hoping it holds, this subharness gives you the connections you need in one piece. That's a big deal on an OBD0 swap, where the wiring is usually the part that eats up your weekend and your patience. Plug it in, get your VTEC and sensors wired right, and get on with the rest of the build.
