Supertech Black Nitride Exhaust Valve Set - Honda/Acura B16A / B17A / B18C
If you're freshening up a B-series head or building one to take some boost, your exhaust valves are not the place to cut corners. They live in the hottest, nastiest part of the whole engine, getting blasted by scorching exhaust gas thousands of times a minute, so they take a beating that your intake valves never see. This Supertech set is built for exactly that abuse. You get 8 black nitride exhaust valves, enough for a full B-series head, forged from heat-resistant 23-8N stainless and treated to stand up to the kind of thermal load a high-output or turbo build throws at them. Whether you're doing a straight valve job or putting together a serious race motor, these are the valves that won't be the weak link up top.
Why The Material And Finish Actually Matter
Here's what you're really paying for. Exhaust valves cop way more heat than intakes, so Supertech forges these from 23-8N stainless, a heat-resistant alloy made to handle the extreme temps of high-output and boosted engines without losing strength. On top of that, the valve gets a black nitride treatment that hardens the surface and cuts down friction and wear, which is exactly what you want on a part sliding in its guide nonstop under brutal heat. They've also got higher fatigue resistance and tensile strength than a stock valve, so they hold up to sustained high-RPM abuse instead of fatiguing and failing on you, and on a valve, a failure isn't a leak, it's a dropped valve and a destroyed engine. This is one part you genuinely want to be over-built.
Built To Tight Tolerances, Top To Bottom
These aren't generic blanks somebody finished off, Supertech makes them for this specific application and tests the airflow to get the shape right. The valve tip is hardened past 52HRc so it shrugs off the hammering from your rockers over the long haul, and the stem is Superfinished down to about a third of the surface roughness you'd get on a chrome-coated valve, which means less friction, less guide wear, and a longer life. Tight dimensional tolerances and precision-finished seats mean they seal clean and drop into your build without drama. From the forging to the final finish, these are made to be right.
Standard Or +0.5mm Oversize
This is the dished exhaust valve, and you can grab it in standard size or a +0.5mm oversize. The standard runs a 28.00mm head, a 5.45mm stem, and a 102.50mm overall length on a single-groove keeper setup. Go with the standard size for a straight refresh or a rebuild on a clean seat, and the +0.5mm oversize if your machinist is opening up the seats for more flow or cleaning up worn seats during the valve job. Either way, you're getting all 8 exhaust valves in the set.
Do The Whole Valvetrain While You're In There
You've got the head apart, so make it count. For a complete refresh, pair these exhaust valves with matched Supertech intake valves, valve springs, retainers, valve guides, and stem seals, so everything up top is fresh and working together instead of bolting new valves against tired old springs and worn guides. And if your build is really pushing the thermal limits, Supertech offers Inconel and sodium-filled valves for the most extreme applications, worth a look if you're going big on boost.
A Couple Of Assembly Notes
Two things to nail down during assembly, because valves are not forgiving. Check your valve-to-piston clearance, especially if you're running aggressive cams or oversize valves, you do not want a valve kissing a piston at high RPM. And set your installed spring height correctly so your springs are controlling the valves the way they should through the whole RPM range. Get those two right and these valves will do their job for a long time.
